  • Have unusual lag/packetloss on the new server?

Some people have reported network problems now that we've changed to the new server. Fortunately, we now have a greatly improved capability to troubleshoot these issues, due to being able to trace not just your path to the server, but now also the server's path to you.

If you're willing to try to help us troubleshoot your connection issues, please download WinMTR here: https://winmtr.en.uptodown.com/windows/download

In the Host box, type: server.trenchwars.org

Let it run at least 5 minutes, then click "Copy Text to clipboard".

Now look up your IP address. A simple way is by visiting this site: https://www.whatismyip.com

Then send me a DM by clicking here: https://forums.trenchwars.com/privatemessage/new/2910

Paste your IP address and the mtr report along with a short explanation of the problems you've experienced.

IMPORTANT NOTE: By doing this, you're requesting that we also run a reverse trace along the route from the server to your home network, and are agreeing that we may provide this information to the hosting company in order to help troubleshoot your network issues. This information will not be used to personally identify you.
"You're a gentleman," they used to say to him. "You shouldn't have gone murdering people with a hatchet; that's no occupation for a gentleman."

I'll try this, because the lag has been enough to stop me from playing much of the time. I get specced in elim constantly (ruining countless amounts of games) with lag around 140 ms .1 .1 ploss, because something will pop up saying "slow s2c ploss too high" or things like that, which I cannot check on my own and have absolutely no idea what that even means. How can I have slow s2c if i'm sitting at .1 .1? Also, I'll see stuff like ping spike lagouts where it goes above 50 ms, as if going from 140 ms to 190 ms for half a second is somehow too high. Maybe it is if I lived right next to the server like many people do, but I had to move to Istanbul for work, so it's literally impossible for me to go below 140 ms at any time of the day. Matter of fact, about the only time I don't get shitty ploss is when all of Europe is asleep and not trying to connect through the same hops to get to American servers, meaning like 2 or 3 am. It's as if this server uses an even worse path than Hopone, because there's literally no way for me to know when I'm able to play and when I'm not these days.

Honestly, I question why we have the lag limits we do in TW as it is, because the game certainly never had these in place back when PriitK made the client. I know the limits were lowered significantly in the recent past, and its made it nearly impossible for anyone outside of America to play. As it is, I'd guess that anyone in Asia or Australia would have absolutely no ability to play Subspace with the current lag limits in place, so who exactly does it help? I would even laggout when I was living in Chicago and Seattle, so the lag I get in Istanbul is near unplayable much of the time, and for no fault of my own. I'd understand if there was spyware or a coin miner or something on my computer, or if i was downloaded torrents while trying to connect to a 20+ year old game, but when modern internet cannot play such an old game, and the playerbase is extremely limited as it is, I have no idea why lag limits were lowered recently to limit that playerbase even more.

You know it's bad when many outside of America claim the only way they could play Subspace at all was to use a VPN to change the route to the server. When Broadband internet cannot play a 20+ year old 2d astroids clone, there's a problem. Why is it being blamed on ISPs, when it seems to be such a common problem for so many people?

EDIT: I sent you the info you requested.
