  • Mystery yet to be solved

Yesterday I unplugged my computer and moved it and after that my ethernet port/cable has stopped working. Nor my router or my comp flash the activity light on the ethernet port yet my router seems to be fully operational. I can access internet from my wireless which is linked to my router so it shouldn't be all blown up atleast. I have switched cables, checked the ports, restarted everything numerous times and even did a repair installation on my windows. Still dead. I'm really running low on ideas right now and I'm not in the mood buying more parts for my comp. Sigh :/

Also windows says "A Network cable is unplugged" and has a huge red X next the icon. Can't see the status window, can't repair, only disable it.

I can only think of two things offhand that you may or may not already have done.

      - Reset the router to factory standards, usually accomplished by holding some kind of reset button a couple of seconds and restarting the router.
      - Handchanging your IP adress of the PC to an adress similar to the default gateway IP (192.168.100.105 if your gateway is 192.168.100.100). With my old windows98 PC this sometimes was needed for some reason since the autoassign IP did not work if the set IP was completely off.

so probably just knocked some solder loose on the old card? at least that's what i was thinking when you said it quit after moving it.

unless he slammed the shit on teh ground there is no way the solder broke loose, hardware doesnt last forever.

I haven't smashed it or anything. I'm not raping it... The ethernet was integrated to the motherboard and didn't want to take my whole computer apart just to get it into warranty. I just hope nothing else breaks down on it.

Tested the old port today.. It works.
                      Sob

It's really a mystery how it stopped working, it can't have been ESD either. Using the new network card for now since it seems to be better.
