  • Help me choose my new laptop

My 5-year-old motherboard on my desktop fried a while ago and I'm getting a new laptop with only moderate regard to cost cause it's a gift from someone who can afford it. I fear it will crap out on me sooner or later anyway because that has been my experience with laptops. Also my roommates (who would use it too) and I are frequent smokers so I can't picture it lasting forever unless you guys know something I don't. Our Wii is pathetic, I wish I'd known it was a non-smoking console.

So I'm looking for something on the upper end of reasonable. I don't do much pc gaming, but my gf likes to run architecture programs with 3d generation. I need it to connect to a tv (hd), I watch plenty of videos, and I'd like to play poker on it while I do.

    What do you recommend?

ps I don't care for macs, 8 years ago it was because of compatability but now I just don't like their ad campaign.

Taking a guess at what else you may/may not want in the laptop. I stayed away from integrated graphics, got an average screen size, higher end CPU, good sized HDD, enough RAM, HDMI and VGA outputs for your TV.

Here's what I liked out of Newegg and Best Buy:
