  • For those who train in the gym

What Training program are you doing?

I've been given a training program from some gym trainer from a forum, based on complex exercises and low repeats.

Squad\Deadlift (changing every 6 days of workout) 4x6-8
    barbell bench press 4x6-8
    pull up or rows 4x6-8
    military press 2x6-8
(an optional of adding a small muscle exercise if needed, I think ill do something for the triceps.)

I used to work on AB program like the old days, but it seems now that everything is about HIT, HST, 5x5 and some AB periodization combos (like push-pull, Upper-Lower).

    So how do you train?

well for starters, i train my whole body, not just the same excersises every day. It's all built into a daily schedule for me. For example monday is chest arms and shoulders with light cardio. Tuesday is Back and Core, with light cardio. Wednesday is heavy cardio (i play hockey on wednesdays too, thats why no weights) thursday is arms and chest, friday is legs, back and shoulders. Saturday is core and medium cardio. Sunday is an off day, or whatever i feel like doing (no chest, shoulders or arms though, since thats monday)

That works my entire body out sorta 1 1/2 times a week. I do some things less (legs) because I just honestly don't need them as much.

When I go to the gym (which was a lot, before I started student teaching), I pretty much just try to do some cardio and some strength. I might run some laps, do some cycling, or maybe the row machine. For strength, I usually have kind of a freeweights routine that I go through. I'm done with student teaching as of today (well, the initial, first semester version of it), so maybe I will be going there a lot again.

            i have a question-

i'm too unmotivated/poor/busy to go to the gym, but i keep in shape with a basic routine (a few sets of pushups and pullups daily), and lately i've began increasing my sets with the intention of actually building muscle... i'm pretty scrawny, and i'd like to change that.

can someone give me a few pointers? should i have a diet? should i be doing any other types of exercises? i'm definitely toned as fuck, but like i said, i'm shooting for a bigger upper torso... is there a workout that really focuses on the chest area?

Well from what I remember jerome, you're naturally thin which means you probably don't need to change much in terms of diet. When in doubt, keep your protein up and your fat low, but thats pretty basic stuff that you could probably avoid. I work out 5-6 times a week, all out of the home. I have a set of free weights that I find do me just fine, and I do have a leg machine I use, but I don't do my legs much, so it's not a big deal. You can probably go out and by weights that are suitable for not much. I think I bought mine for 30 bucks, and then bought another set for another 30 (so i could double the weight). so thats 60 bucks for basically everything I use, because I could get by without the leg machine just fine.

When in doubt, I would suggest the free weights. You don't need some gym membership (i always found the fact that i'd have to go out to work out a reason for me not go workout)

Slightly OT, but is there a way to do cardio (build at least some sweat) with no equipment inside during the winter?

you cant grow muscles by doing push ups...
your body get use to the overload pretty quick and you just need to add weight and you cant.
Pull ups is good exercise, also chest dips. but again, if you want to get big, that wont help you alone.

i dont lift all that often, but when i do, its usually a variety of free weights. i like them 23048923 times more than any machines. machines are alright i suppose, i jsut think that freeweights benefit your muscles in that entire area much more. uses all those stabilization type muscles that dont get the same workout when using a machine. (through good form/balance)

ive been under the weather a bit lately, so i havent done all that much. but i usually try to swim around 10 or so miles a week. dont really have a regular schedule due to odd hours that life and work takes up. but, the y has decent enough hours and i can usually get in when i want to.

za, arent you a swimmer? you still get in the water?
if i ever find the time, thinking about trying to train a bit here and there and join a masters team.

also, my girlfriend is really getting into yoga. i used to think it was nothing but stretching and breathing... and thats pretty much what it is. you can get a really really good core workout through it though. works great for improving your flexibility and lung capacity.

Yeah you can't get the really big ones without going to the gym and eat anabolics, but you can grow muscles and you can keep in shape. Alternate and try to attack the muscles in different ways just like you do in the gym. Take push ups for example... you can hold your arms wide apart or close to your body, have your feet up on a bench, do them explosive and clap your hands etc. Free weights is very good though and it shouldn't be impossible to find some cheap second hand like nickname said.

Go play squash with a friend, its a great workout, good fun and the time flies like mad.
You only need a racket for it and cough up 5 euro to go to the court. A racket won't set you back more than 30 if you play it for fun.

I was thinking more like absolutely no equipment and in house. I don't wanna resort to the aerobic workout videos ...

There's always running in the dead of winter with the potential on slipping on ice and breaking some bones.
