Didn't you know that before Flea took up bass, that he was basically a virtuoso trumpet player? (virtuoso's are the ones that play solo's in orchestra's, Andres Segovia was a virtuoso classical guitar player for example)
I think RHCP is doing what they do best, making music they love. Just like Radiohead, they're progressing...we might not like everything they put out, but they do, and that's really what they care about.
