  • Dell Suck

    They suck so bad.

My Cd Rom drive doesn't work and I'm still waiting for them to even reply back to my e-mail after ages of waiting.
Now my floppy disk drive just doesnt want to do anything.

Word of Adive, their prices may seem appetising....but don't do it. Spend the extra cash on getting a decent computer that doesn't break constantly.

It's a bad idea to buy from Dell in the first place. I have a rather long and fantastic story about it.

        <rant>
My laptop required on-site service and support 7 times (thank goodness for the add-on 3 year warrantee) because the LCD screen broke 4 times and the motherboard died 3 times. Talk about a piece of crap. I'm not even exaggerating... the service guy knew me by name. He was very happy to see me, knew me by name, and called me his 'best customer' because apparantly he gets paid pretty well (as an outsourced tech guy) to do the repairs.

Anyway, the 8th time it broke, it died entirely! It wouldn't start at all! I sent it in to Dell, and they found this little spot of rust on it and determined that I poured water into it. And *this* was why it wasn't working! The thing is, they gave me a replacement motherboard less than a month ago, so either someone poured water into this motherboard before it came to rest in my laptop, or they were full of it altogether!

They wouldn't replace it, so now I'm stuck with a bunch of pieces of dead laptop, that still has a full year left on the extended warrantee.

Anyway, don't buy Dell, because I won't ever again. They've lost so much business because of me - I've told dozens of people this story through various means and even stopped sales in progress.

Person> I'm about to buy a Dell, what should I get?
        DoCk> NOOOOOOO!!!!

Award winning service and support, my ass. Maybe in 1998.

My rant about them is in the Tech Support forum. Don't buy anything you care about from Dell.

I am also in the same situation as DoCk> but it was an HP Laptop. I sent it out to get fixed or replaced and they sent it back and wouldn't honor the warranty because and i'm quoting the tech guy "Someone took a knife to the mother board". That's damn odd when no one could even open it or would even try. The best I got for the hard drive (the only part that apparently would sell) was 20 $. A 1000 $ laptop .

im on a dell right now, been on it for 2.5 years and it hasnt caused me ANY trouble, its solid as a rock. all the while i have been laughing at the rest of my family who has an HP downstairs. that thing is not only slow as fuck, but its got so many things wrong with it you cant even use the control alt delete function. its always been shitty. they never turn it off because it has so many errors on start up that it is extremely complex and random to try to boot.

I often hear that compaqs are pieces of crap, but I've had mine for 2 years and it still works. The upgradability isnt great but i still stuck some new stuff in there. Just remember to repartition the drive and install a fresh copy of the OS... cuz my compaq came with XP home and it had all this useless compaq stuff in it that i couldnt remove.

thats strange because HP are usually very reliable, my first PC was a HP one and we never got it repaired once, 1996-2001, then we threw it away.

I'm sure if you looked hard enough, any major (or minor, for that matter) name brand has the same issues as those outlined above.

I manage a few hundred desktops/workstations, laptops, and servers. I'd say a good 90% of them are Dells, and I can honestly say that after about a decade of doing this, they aren't any worse than any other brand I've dealt with. And as far as replacements, I've never had any problem getting parts apart from the recent trend that Dell wants most laptops returned to them for servicing.

As far as "fuck Dell, diy"... I'm almost sure that the majority of you don't want to do it this way. With as much complaining that goes on here about Dell's replacements, imagine having to call each individual manufacturer in the event of a problem. It's not fun. DIY is good for people that don't mind spending time with their machine (I do it this way), but most people don't want to deal with the hassle.
Music and medicine, I'm living in a place where they overlap.

in the event of a problem ypou take said component back to store and get it RMAd.. its a lot easier than sending your whole laptop to dell for a week.
