There must be something about hockey that I don't get. Why shoudln't they win a cup? Who cares if their top players are from quebec? Quebec doesn't have a team, barely any canadian cities have teams anymore because their dollar is so weak vs the US dollar.

You can be nostalgic and talk about what city deserves what, but it's simple economics and the players go where the money's at.

It's actually like 74 cents to the USD or something now? That's not horrible. I'm just saying that the American teams are winning mostly cause of Canadian players, and some finesse styled euros

Eh yeah.. well considering most hockey players are Canadian, that tends to happen... Who cares? Pretty much every sport / competition has teams that represent a specific area (city, state, country), but it's rare if most (or any) of their players / staff actually originate from there.

If you want truly regional teams (with only local blood), then wait around 4 years and shun everything but the soccer world cup, Olympics, and rugby world cup or something (if even those are 100% "pure").

You don't see the point that Canadian teams pay their players in American dollars as well. Lets see you go up to Larry Tanebaum (Owner of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment) and ask whether he's got the money to pay the players 10 Mil in American dollars and still have profit. The Air Canada Center is a full house every Leafs game and at the moment, Gold level seats are selling at least $1000+. Platinums are probably going at $3000 but of course, these are restricted to major businesses who can afford them. The point is, the rich Canadians will pay for it in American dollars because if they have a plus billion dollar networth, what would they care for the exchange rate?

Toronto is one of the richest hockey towns in the world. Basically only behind Detroit and New York (rangers that is). All 6 of the original teams are still filling the house 90% of the time including Chicago no matter how shitty of a team they have.

Toronto is the anomaly. You cannot apply the same scenario to the other five Canadian teams. The demographics just aren't here as in Edmonton, or Calgary, or even Montreal. Toronto is the only team that has never needed to ask the league for financial support, so the Leafs won't make the best example to compare to other teams.

Yeah, that's true. But I think Montreal may also be in that range as well. All Original Six Teams will remain where they are with great profit every year no matter how bad they are. The OS teams always seem to produce great players too or mold players into great ones like Toronto did with Sundin, Rangers with Leetch, BlackHawks with Sullivan, and various others.

But anyway, my point is that all expensives, pay checks, and the like are counted in American dollars so you can't say 10 mil from a Canadian team is worst than 10 Mil from an American Team.

Btw, what's going on with Washington? I heard rumours they were planning on moving to a lower division hockey league and leave the NHL.
The Jets were cool. Go Leafs Go!

You forget the fact that ticket revenue (as well as TV contracts with Canadian broadcasters) come in Canadian currency. The money these teams are paying is in US funds, but the money they're making is in Canadian. That's where the conversion rates can hurt.

Yeah. But I'd like to know the average ticket price of an American team game to actually make the comparison...

Those figures are all in American funds.

I don't see how that helps your point though.
