The PSP is much much more powerful than the DS. It has a 333 MHz processor (the PS2 meanwhile has a 300 MHz, although the portable processor for the PSP may be slower overall), and 32 megs ram (PS2 has 32 as well). It can play full motion video, has a high resolution screen at 480*280 something res (much nicer than the DS), can play music, and just looks a ton better

The games will look a lot nicer too. They're basically going to be as good as PS2 games because it's just as powerful but with less resolution to worry about. Look at the screenshots for the DS games.. they look like GBA games just dual screen. I was reading a review about how Gran Turismo 4 on the PSP will look just as good as the PS2 version. Now that's insane...

Too bad it'll be mega expensive, but hell it would be cool just to hack and have a portable media player that looks extremely cool and can also play games too!

Lol i like how none of you have mentioned the battery life the PSP will have. The power required to spin that drive is quite a lot and for a screen that big with ps2 level graphics it isnt a surprise sony has said the battery will only be able to last around 2.5 hours while playing games/movies and 10 hours for audio media. It's also estimated it will cost $300 while DS is estimated to cost $150.

The PSP may be more powerful than the DS but factor in the touch screen, mic, wi-fi and you get tons of possibilities for developers. I also dont know how u can say Nintendo is for kids, they market to all ages and make damn good+addictive games.

Well, it's just gonna end up coming down to the game selection.
I'll buy the first to have Castlevania.

look at mario, pokemon, kirby, pikman. look at the range of E to M rated games that they produce. they're mostly E rated games targeted for younger gamers, Nintendo always has been that way. It works for them, i'm not knocking it cause its working for them. and now that they seem to be maturing with the new Zelda (see other thread) which is a good thing.

Plus you can also attach your keys to it and then complain to Sony when they scratch the screen.

Haven't any of you noticed the placement of the speaker on that PSP? Your thumb is gonna rest on it when pushing up/down/left/right... Thus, basically muting the sound... What idiot decided that?

Maybe it's got special technology that vibrates your thumb bones, then circulates the sound all the way to ear.

Two smallers holes at the bottom of each side appear to be the stereo speakers. and no ,you'll not cover those up, cause you don't hold your hands inward when holding a game controler, or gameboy or something. You're not trying to put the bottom of your palms together.

System images, detailed information, and more from Sony's slick portable.
May 11, 2004 - To say that Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld system dominated the company's E3 2004 press conference would be an understatement. Officially unveiled approximately 20 minutes into the presentation, the new game system was a big hit with the crowd and finally answered several of questions that most of us have been asking in the year since the hardware was first announced.

Scheduled to be launched in Japan at the end of the year (North America and Europe get it in the spring of 2005), The PSP is available in PlayStation 2 black with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD display that boasts over 16.7 million colors and a resolution of 480x272. Dimensionally, its numbers are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260 grams. Basic portable functions like built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selectors are among the lineup of features, and the buttons mirror that of a PlayStation 2 controller almost exactly (Square, Triangle, X, and Circle face buttons, a digital pad, start, select, and an analog thumb stick populate the face, with two shoulder buttons on the top).

Additionally, the new system comes standard with USB 2.0 and 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless LAN connectors that allow for multiple PSPs to be simultaneously connected to one another. Data and software can then be downloaded either by using the wireless LAN connections or through the use of a Memory Stick Pro Duo. The PSP also adopts the small high-capacity optical medium Universal Media Disc, the UMD. This format not only allows for 1.8 GB of space, it also provides an extremely versatile format for games, music, and video. The press conference demo showed off the trailer for Spider-Man 2 (the movie not the game) as well as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children which is coming to both the DVD and UMD formats. To protect the content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.

Unfortunately, Sony did not announce a price point for the system so how much the unit will cost is still somewhat of a mystery. We expect officials to announce a more formal pricing structure at the upcoming ECTS or Tokyo Game show events; but we wouldn't mind if something a little meatier came down the pipeline before then. Click on our media page below to view the first official images from the system and stay tuned to IGNPSP for more throughout the day.

So the thing below the d-pad is actually the analog stick?

They should just make this thing with an output so you can send the picture to a full-sized tv.
