  • Egg Drop

Hey, at school we're doing this thing where you have to take 3 eggs and make some sort of container, that, when dropped from 10 feet with the egs inside, the eggs won't break. The container has to be tissue box sized or smaller, and you get extra points for having the smallest container. Oh, and they can't be plastic eggs or anything, and they can't be soaked in vinegar, and they can't be hardboiled. The container can be anything, with any padding inside, and you can put containers inside of containers if you want.

But I'm stupid so I wanna get some suggestions from you guys about what to do, since a ton of you are like super geniuses.

If you put the egg in a good, strong bottle and filled it completely (no air at all) with water and put a tight, strong cap on it, I think it would work.

Pack the egg in loose flour. Use the smallest container you can find. soup can should be fine, but put a weight on the bottom so it falls the correct way down. Should be okay though.

Instead of water, if you go stab's route, use oil, or corn syrup.

I've done this before, but only with one egg.. we just took a full jar of peanut butter, dug a little hole and slid the egg in.. it worked.

Put a parachute on it, an easy way is to take a plastic bag and tie it around the container.

the way to work around the rules for this to work is such

1.) they can't specify that you cannot attach anything to it
2.) the container is the size of a tissuebox

              I've dont his before.
Use a Cone shape, fill it with shreaded paper or cotton wool summit soft with air gaps (air easiy compresses and absorbs the force), put the egg inbetween that, make sure the sides of the egg are protected well. When u drop it make sure the cone point is falling first (that will absorbthe force). To keep it falling straigh down, put long strips of paper on the end acting as fins. Then just hope.

Ooo very good ideas everyone - the peanut butter one sounds good, plus with a parachute. You're right Matt, they said it could be any type of container and never said no parachutes! Yea, getting three eggs in one bottle of water would be a bit difficult, considering the opening is rather small. The flour one sounds good and so does the cone one. I'll just go steal some eggs from our chickens and just hope my parents don't notice and try some of these out

Someone used a tin can, filled it with sand, and put the egg in the middle. Worked fine. Hardest part was bending the can rim back so they could get the egg out.

I did this before too. We only had 1 egg though, and we put it inside a large container of motor oil. Dropped it from 3 stories not even a scratch

For some reason i was thinking about this this morning. we did this in 7th grade. but the container was dropped from the roof of the school. i put mine in a small "Gladware" container. it didnt work.... but this morning, i was thinking about somehow getting the egg inside of a watermelon. although the watermelon will be oo big, it may work... that is if the melon doesn crack :P

Try Hmm...Freezing the Egg $$$ a loophole in the system. :P

We added a parachute to our peanut butter jar just to be sure we got an A, but in our tests, it worked without it...

the paper cone seems like a really good idea too... if you kept the cone pointed down, that would get crushed and absorb the shock.

The idea is a high viscosity fluid. Peanut butter certainly works. Motor oil works too, and so does jello made so that you put at little water in as you can (I've tried that too) if they require the egg to be somewhat clean

If you don't want to risk the parachute not opening up, or getting tangled, you could use a rotary construction. Works very well, but it's a bit more difficult to make.
