The best possible bike you could get for £299 is Specialized Hardrock sport. Great components for the price. I've got one myself. The Treks are okay, but only really start getting good once you pay over 1k, the Giant Terrago isn't too bad. But specialized all the way.

Last night I put a new shifter on a used Trek I bought. $100+$15 = working bike. Now me and my woman can hit the trails.

There's my bike Insera MX-P2, it was on sale, only 300€ (385$). Normal prize
was 470€ (604$). Not an expensive or ultra hightech bike but I'm loving it.
