Why are you laughing at the NDP? They increased their number of seats, and because the Liberals want to pass policy and the Conservatives will vote against them, the Grits will have to suck up to those NDP members to get enough votes. The NDP has more power now than they would have if they were the opposition, and definately more than they had the last few elections.

                Liberals - 135
                Conservatives - 99
                BQ - 54
                NDP - 19
                IND - 1

The independant is an old conservative party member and is apparently expected to rejoin them. If he does this happens.

                Conservatives - 100

Plus they add in the votes with the BQ as they work together for 154 seats. Assuming the Liberals ally with the NDP they'd have 154 seats. Wonderful, nothing will get done. Unless the indy goes to the liberals, then they have a majority (sort of, witht he ndp and all)

You forget that one member has to be the speaker of the house, and he doesn't get a vote unless it's to break a tie.

Since the selection of the speaker is done by a silent vote for nominated choices, this time, we might see a case where MPs would prefer a Speaker from the opposing side, just to take away that one vote. While there are benefits to having the speaker be a member of your party, the job requires complete impartiality. Because of how close the numbers are, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Conservative speaker selected.

Also, politically, a lot of BQ members share common opinions with Liberals. I would be surprised if they didn't throw some support towards the Liberals. This pretty much forces the Grits to make policy that will appeal to the BQ and NDP MPs.

I'm happy the liberals are a minority now, and that the NDP did fairly well. Although I had really hoped the country would of realized how much shit the liberals have done to this country, and would of voted otherwise. Personally, I'm not old enough to vote - but I listen to the radio and read bits from the Citizen now and then.

I'm not too worried about the minority government. Because NDP will definitely go with the liberals before they agree with the conservatives, and the bloc are basically more left wing than liberals are.

hahahaha I'm so happy those nazi conservatives didn't win and we didn't turn into America II.

that lone independant probably won't be rejoining the conservatives from what i hear. he didn't win the conservative nomination to run in his riding, but he wanted to run anyway, so when the conservative party found out they warned him not to run or he wouldn't be welcome in the caucus. they revoked his membership in the party when he ran. i don't know, with fewer seats than the conservatives expected maybe they'll end up apologizing.
as for votes. on some major issues the liberals share grounds with either one party or another. liberals and conservatives are slightly for the missle defense program, while the liberals can look for help from the ndp and some bloc on social programs. shouldn't be too bad of a situation. minority governments can work, as there has been a minority government in nova scotia for the last two terms of legislature.
