My problem is that I don't know song titles. I'll include 'em when I can remember 'em.

Wilco - If you haven't heard Yankee Hotel Foxtrot yet, you're missing out, the entire CD is brilliant, but it's best heard as an entire album

The Detachment Kit - Basically a rock band, but certainly punk based. Dead Angels Make Slow Sound will give you a good clue-in.

Cave In - I think these guys are going to be the next big thing. There are better band out there, but if you want to be the guy that likes the bands before they get huge, jump on this bandwagon. Jupiter was a great LP, and they have a new EP coming out on Hydra Head in October (that I already have) that's solid. They're signed to a major, but it doesn't sound like they're going to sell out. Download Braincandle and Big Riff.

Les Savy Fav- These guys are fucking amazing. Their recorded material doesn't quite match up to their unbelievable live show, but give it a shot anyway. Download: Hide Me From Next February, Pills, Who Rocks The Party?...

Low - My avatar is their new album cover for Trust, which I haven't bought yet, unfortunately. If you want some extraordinarily mellow music with male and female vocals that's perfect for falling asleep to, check out anything from either of their two most recent albums.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - holy shit, veranthihfjdasf whatever and I agree on something, these guys rule.

Mogwai - Similar to Godspeed, but a lot easier to digest, since they use a lot less tape scratching and shit. "Mogwai Fear Satan" is an epic song.

I gotta run, I'll add more later.

                  This, and whatever 'Blast' says

                  Band: Rachels
Albums: Selenography, The Sea And The Bells
Description: Romantic/enchanting instrumental classical post-rock or something

                  Band: Don Caballero
Albums: Singles breaking up, American Don, What Burns Never Returns, Don Caballero II
Description: 'Math-rock', instead of being blindly angry, taking it out on musical complexity, e.g. time-signatures and non-repetition

Will you STOP raiding my CD collection, Blast?

Conc's Note: Actually, any of their CDs are great, depending on what kind of a mood you're in. Being There and Summerteeth are fantastic. Also check out the Mermaid Avenue compilations (Billy Bragg & Wilco).

The Detachment Kit - Basically a rock band, but certainly punk based. Dead Angels Make Slow Sound will give you a good clue-in.

Conc's Note: Here again, I thought I was the only person on this board to listen to these guys. One of my good friends runs FOH (front-of-house, for the acronym-impaired) for these guys and describes them as a band with "a lot of moxy." Take that however you wish, but absolutely one of the best bands to come out of Chicago in recent years.
You might also want to check out:

The Anniversary - A little Pavement-ish, though more harmonically collected. Either album, Designing a Nervous Breakdown or Your Majesty will do, although I prefer the latter. Songs to check out: Never Die Young, Crooked Crown.

Hot Rod Circuit - Frantic, could be described as "The Get Up Kids, if they stayed up all night on a crack binge." These Alabama kids rock. Check out If It's Cool With You, It's Cool With Me if you get a chance. Songs to check out: Irish Car Bomb, Radio Song, The Power of the Vitamin.

And if you're feeling a bit saucy and willing to try something that might seem strange at first...

Self - Gizmodgery is a completely interesting album. The whole thing is recorded entirely with toy instruments. It's not as strange of a concept as it might sound--the outcome is really pretty cool. Not to mention that they cover a Doobie Brothers song, which is hilarious. Throw in a Glen Danzig sample, and you've got an album to be proud of--that's what I always say. Songs to check out: Trunk Fulla Amps.

I'll add a couple more, sorry that I can't remember many song titles.

Amon Tobin - I've always hated techno, but at the same time, I've seen a huge amount of potential in it. I always imagined that somewhere out there, people were making techno that focused more on cool jazzy rhythms than repetative dance club bullshit. This guy is awesome, his stuff is jazzy and cool. Download: Two Ton Mantis

Boards of Canada - Similarly to above, a techno group that doesn't sound like the bullshit stuff that the dude in the dorm next to mine plays that wakes me up every morning. These guys will freak you the fuck out if you're on too many drugs and in a room by yourself, though. Download: Julie and Candy, Dawn Chorus

Hot Snakes - Killer rock band. Sort of punk, sort of retro, but 100% excellent. Download: LAX, I Hate The Kids.

Spoon - I've never met a human being that didn't like Spoon once they'd given them a chance. They're inoffensive and yet challenging at the same time. You could describe it as basic pop-rock, but it's actually good basic pop-rock. I like A Series of Sneaks best out of their albums, but their new one, Kill The Moonlight, is almost as good, but entirely different. Download: Anything. If by chance you don't like the song you downloaded, download another one. If you download five songs and still don't like Spoon, then you just suck.

                        My take on punk/"emo".

I used to like a lot of punk back in high school, but now I'm kind of tired of it. I notice that a lot of SS kids are getting into punk, and I notice that most of them are really misguided in the punk that they listen to.

Here, I'm going to list punk bands that I find acceptable. I notice that a lot of people on these boards listen to punk bands, which is way cooler than listening to Disturbed, but they listen to shitty punk bands that I don't like at all. If you're one of those people, please check out these bands, even though I'm not going to bother to describe each one of them to you because I don't really listen to them much anymore: Lagwagon, NOFX, Strike Anywhere, Lifetime, Kid Dynamite, the second Strung Out album, The New Bomb Turks, Avail (preferably Dixie-era), Refused, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys, hmm, there's probably more, but start with those.

"Emo", aka Saves The Day's new stuff and stuff that sounds like it, and Dashboard-style shitty acoustic pop is going to die really soon. It's a dumb as shit trend that's no cooler than Limp Bizkit, and even though it still has roots in underground legitimate music, it's still a dumb as shit trend.

If you want some real emo buy either Mineral - "The Power of Failing" or Sunny Day Real Estate - "Diary"... song titles: Mineral: Slower, Parking Lot, SDRE: I don't remember any song titles.

                          How could I forget...

Sunny Day Real Estate - Four albums worth of indie rock goodness. Jeremy Enigk is a goddamn musical magician. Sunny Day was supposed to be Sub Pop's "next big thing" after Nirvana hit, but was just a bit too emo for mainstream. Sadly, the band's gone now, but most of the members have re-formed into a new band, The Fire Theft, which have an album coming out shortly. Any Sunny Day album is worth buying. Songs to check out: J'Nuh, Every Shining Time You Arrive, Seven, Sometimes.
