  • Def Jam: Fight For New York

The sequel to the smash hit, Def Jam Vendetta, Fight For New York reinvents the fighting game and is, without a doubt, the one of the greatest 3D fighting games of our time.

The game picks up where the ending of the first one ... well, ends. D-Mob has been captured by the police, with help from the 1st game's "hero". He gets the girl, D-Mob gets arrested, everyone lives happily ever after, right? Wrong.

While D-Mob is being driven to the police station, the car transporting him gets rammed by a large SUV and D-Mob escapes with help from you. You, again, take the role of a hero who you can bling out however you want in a very robust and creatively free Create-a-Fighter system which plays out as a police profile.

You now join D-Mob's group to take New York from Crow, the new boss in town played by Snoop Dogg. And this is where your game begins. After you're done creating your character and going through the tutorial match, you are now off, starting with the small monkey boys and headed toward the big money players of Crow's Crew.

Inbetween fights you get contacted by your allies, enemies, and local store clerks about updates in your story mode and having new stuff available for sale via your cellphone. The rest of the story is driven through nicely done in-engine cinematics. These cinematics are beautifully designed and the voicing and scripting is top-notch. I would have to put this up to a blockbuster movie calibur level of voice acting and scripting. I'm not making shit up, I'm not overexaggerating, this is that damn good.

Now, I know what you're thinking, cause I thought the same thing when I first saw Def Jam Vendetta when it first came out. "What the fuck are they thinking? I'm not gonna by some piece of shit game that says 'Def Jam' on the title." I know, looking at the title it'll probably put you off cause your expectations for a game sponsered by Def Jam and it's recording artists will be quite low. But, this is not the case, whatsoever. Just goto your local video rental store and try it, at least. You won't be disappointed if you are a fighting game fan.

The fighting is one part Fight Club one part UFC and one part WWE. If you're a fan of any of those 3, you'll feel right at home with this game. The controls are easy to pick up and with the assortment of different winning conditions, anyone can find a way that they can operate the game to victory, be it special move knockout, weapons, or submission fighting.

I have to give this my unprofessional cerification as a game that you gotta go play. Two thumbs up, 5 Stars, 10/10, whatever you wanna rate it at, its 3D fighting game perfection. Play it now, Def Jam : Fight for New York.

Note: When you play this, and you beat the game's story mode (credits roll, end music plays), the game is not over. I almost turned it off, but when you load your file there is much more to unlock and to play afterward.
