    Controlling your emotions

    Author: Mr. Mafioso.

Buona Sera, boys. Here I am, right in your face, with another lesson from the school of hard knocks. I recently witnessed a funny little scene at the local bar when one of the patrons, a colorful, but not too bright fellow (and I'm not talking about you this time, Vincenzo) lost his cool and said some things he shouldn't have.
It went a little something like this (don't quote me on this because when it happened, I was already well-acquainted with my good friends Misters Chivas & Regal):

Guido: I'm not paying this damn bill!

Bartender: Excuse me? Everyone has to pay their tab.

Guido: You heard me, you fat SOB, I'm not paying; you overcharged me.

Bartender: If I overcharged you, we can fix that, please let me see the bill.

Guido (screaming): Screw you, old man, you're trying to rip me off. I'm never coming here again... blah, blah, blah.

Guido was then escorted out back, tenderized and left lying in the rain to clean himself up by the very efficient (and very big) doormen. Nice work boys, that jackass had it coming. Next time, he'll be more of a gentleman.

    Nothing personal, just business

Perhaps one of the most important things you will learn in life is how to control your emotions. Too many people are unable to hold back and they let loose every chance they get. The effect this has in business is that it shows others that you have no self-control. It proves that you can't even control your own balls. So how the hell are you going to control employees and run a business?

If you can't manage yourself, you sure won't be able to manage others, and business is about people boys, remember that. It always comes down to people. Even in my line of work, I can't just whack someone; I need to get permission first. This avoids guys taking early dirt naps because someone lost their temper over some broad or some loaded dice.

    Logic vs. emotion

People operate on two levels: rational and emotional. For most people, the emotional side is predominant. That is, they let their emotions and feelings rule their actions. Maybe they are just too lazy to think things through or they just don't have the brains to do so. Very few people live by logic, but it's these people that run the world. They calculate everything and don't let their feelings get in the way of getting the job done.

In this case I'm referring to controlling your temper. Some people (friends, colleagues, reporters, etc.) will try to make you lose your balance and logic by making you first lose your temper. When you lose your cool, you don't think straight, and consequently do and say things that can hurt you.

If our friend from earlier had just realized there was a small mistake on his bill and given his tab to the barman to fix, this whole thing could have easily been avoided. Instead, the guy chose to lose his cool and a few teeth in the process.

I like controlling my temper. Either it is done by praying, or forcing myself to think about things or at the situation at hand.
            Endless space, endless exploration.

              Throughout time, there’s been
              crimes, throughout our history
But not as great, as the one of late, affecting you and me
Once a nation proud and free, and now we’re weeping sorrow’s tears
Tragedy’s approaching, it’s worse than all your fears

              Come on my countrymen
Come on and take a stand
Don’t let ‘em take away your land

              the Wenger bus is coming
and all the kids are running
              from London to Manchester
