Band names

I'm really looking for an answer: When do you put "The" in front of a band name? Is there some sort of rule that I'm not seeing?

Why is it The Smashing Pumpkins, The Roots, The Velvet Underground, The Shins but no "The" in Garbage, Pearl Jam, Counting Crows, Modest Mouse, Beastie Boys? I don't get it. Is it optional? I am annoyed. Duh...

Most band names that end in an s would tend to put "the" in front of the name. Beastie Boys and Counting Crows being exceptions, probably because they wanted to avoid having the word "the" in their band name.

Its plural or collective. Maybe so that each band member feels a part of it more.

I don't really think theres a rule other than that you put a "the" if its a plural. There's a band named Liars and I've always thought it was dumb that they weren't called The Liars.

because when u want to do a google search, it takes out "the". this way, with no "the" in the name, u will get more results. $
