If you want an invite to get a gmail account, you need to provide

1. first name
2. last name

3. CURRENT email adress, then you get you choose your @gmail.com name hwen you recieve an invite.

I got 12, but im not giving any away here.

And there is nothing wrong about making a gmail account with your name in it. jdoe@gmail.com etc. makes it a lot easier to remember your email, and looks more professional than i_rockyou_sex6253@gmail.com when doing business, or on your resumes.
