Avast! rocks as my anti-virus software. I mean it truly rocks. I use the Linksys firewall that comes with my router and browser wise I use both Opera 7.60 preview and Firefox 1.0. Opera is better for the advance user who wants everything he or she could ever dream of. My browser reads me all the websites I vist.

There's a hardware firewall on the Uni network + the Windows XP firewall, and for AV I use Sophos (The uni give it to you free).

I use I.E. 6 for browsing, it's quite good with SP2, even blocks popups.

I've got ZoneAlarm running locally, and a Linux box setup as another firewall. For antivirus, I use the free personal version of AVG Antivirus.

                    My browser? Firefox + Adblock.

I reccomend against using any type of lame firewall that gives you alerts or whatever when it thinks you're being attacked. They do more harm than good. If you have a cable/DSL router set up for NAT as your local gateway it's just as good. Most incoming connections at that point are stopped dead in their tracks, because they're not forwarded to any specific machine on your internal LAN, unless a machine is set as the DMZ, or you yourself set up port forwarding.

You *do not need an additional firewall* unless you're attempting to protect your machine against threats in your internal lan. This means if your brother is trying to screw with your computer from his room down the hall. You only need this type of firewalling if you're *connected directly* to your cable/dsl modem, and this never happens nowadays.

These software "firewalls" are really venturing into the realm of IDS... and it doesn't belong on a layman's desktop. It's just a huge ploy to make people nervous so they buy more security crap. If you think tying yourself up with chains and being whipped is fun, one of these firewalls might do you some good. Otherwise, lose it.

If you want to know, TWSites.com gets "attacked" literally thousands of times per day. Lets see, 472,840 alerts in 70 days. That's about 6754 alerts per day! Various internet worms, like slammer try to brute force the passwords to various accounts and root at least 6 times a day. I'm a pretty decent defender now,

Oh yeah, I use f-prot as my virus scanner, and Firefox as my browser. Ad-Aware SE is the good stuff as well, although I haven't had a problem with it since I stopped using IE a long long time ago.

I use McAfee VirusScan, I don't use the McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, Privacy Service or SpamKiller. I use Integrated Windows XP SP2 firewall and have Ad-Aware SE Professional for my anti-spyware needs. I also use Mozilla Firefox, damn you if you're using anything else... except Opera.

firewalls are a waste of resources and a pain in the ass.

i use firefox. if anyone steals my credit card number, im protected, and if someone erases my harddrive i have everything backed up, and i have no information that if anyone steals is of any concern to me.
