I think what most religious indie kids lose sight of is why they like the music they like. Succses is not a sin if you got there on your own terms. I'm not going to suddenly stop listening to an indie band gone mainstream becuase they are big. Changing their sound once they're sucsessfull might warrent that, however. The legitimate complaint about an artist is not they are on mtv, but that they are no talents hacks who are popular for the reasons unrealted to their talent or music. Alot of pop artists (and I use the term loosely) would be out of work if they were ugly. When you're just a pretty face to appear on music videos for music you didn't write and, without the aide of studio magic, could not even preform live, then you're a fraud. People will happily consume bullshit music if it has big, albeit fake, tits. Video truely did kill the radio star.
A good example of indie music that became relativly popular without any airtime is Dispatch. Their sucsess was due to two things: quality and a viable alternative medium for distrubution (napster). Over 110k people, some from as far away as New Zealand, came to their farewell show last summer in Boston.
