Barbie began in the mid 1950’s when Ruth Handler purchased a Bild Lilli doll, a German sex toy aimed at men based on a character in a newspaper and sold in adult shops and tobacconists. Ruth "borrowed" her design as the basis for the original Barbie but changed her into a 19 year old teenage fashion model who supposedly had innocent, chaste and virtuous qualities (did she actually look at a Number One Barbie?, talk about vixen!)
In 1959 the Barbie doll debuted at the New York Toy Show but sales were miserable as parents were reluctant to give their sweet, little daughters a toy that looked like she should be hanging around dark street corners and bars.
