i remember arguing with my (retarded) cousin, he was so adament that LOTR copied all the stuff that was in Harry Potter (wizards, trolls, elves blah blah)

couldnt or wouldnt understand that LOTR was around 50 years before all this Potter shite and still thinks this up to this point, no matter how many times i hit him

Simple solution to a stupid problem...

Grab a copy of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings then the first Harry Crap book and show him the copyright and publishing dates.

Or, force him to watch the Appendicies of Fellowship on the Extended dvd, says it right there. You could also tell him that J.R.R. Tolkien died in the 70s-80s I believe, Pothead didn't come out until late 90s.

The book "Eaters of the Dead" is pretty good though. Not one of Crichton's best, but it's an enjoyable quick read if you're going to be on a plane trip or something.
