Because colleges and universities like using numbers. They make their courses easy to organize and categorize. For example, the basics course would be 101, with the first 1 usually indicating a first year course. Not all courses use simple adjectives like "basic", "intermediate" and "advanced", while using numbers gives them a structure to easily organize their courses.

It all makes perfect sense, yet think if they didt'n use a number system for the students? What a nightmare that would be. In the states, everyone is ID'd from there Social Security Numbers.

Plus numerics are international.
