I just got back from Fry's Electronics today, and I was looking to see what was new, anything on sale, etc*. Well, I own a DS from Christmas, got it as a present, and I have a PSP. Both handhelds are good in their own right, but neither of them have that one 'Halo, Socom, Metal Gear, or Mario' that makes people really want this.
Well, I've played Mario 64 and Warioware on my DS, and that's about it. The other games seem a little half-assed or just rely on it being "Oh here, you're touching shit, isn't it amazing?". Or a PSP game saying "Look, we put this cool PS2 game ... on a PSP ... and we're marketing as something new!", granted, I loved Metal Gear Acid, cause I'm a nerd like that. But, nothing had a good gameplay value, storyline, and multiplayer competitiveness as this game I bought today: Advance Wars: Dual Strike for the Nintendo DS.
This game is a sequel to the sleeper hit, Advance Wars for the Gameboy Advanced, which is a turn based strategy in the same vein as the old Super Conflict for the SNES. Take turns moving your units around the field (on 1 or 2 fronts, utilized by the dual screens) and trying to overwhelm your enemy. Like chess .. with guns and a bit more anime-cute. IN combat, you pick which CO (Commanding Officer) to use that fights the same way you want to: Air or sea based, head-on, stealthly, long-range, etc*. And you use those tactics as best you can for the fight.
They give you the option of using the stylus or the control pad and buttons to play with. I generally used the pad for the gameplay and the stylus for the menus. Fast paced, good sounds, and I liked the cartoony graphics.
My favourite addition is the Map Editor that you can design your own wars and play with friends. And another cool thing is the "DS Game Download" where you can use 1 cartridge and send the game over to the other player's DS to play a game together for a round. Lots, and lots of fun.
This game seriously, got me playing the DS again, and I'm loving every second of it, I give it a 5 out of 5
