You guys probably know everything about this douche already but we don't get news of his stupidity over in the UK.

So from what I know, Jack Thompson is a lawyer against violent games, claiming they're the cause of every sin in the world, or along those lines. He is so against them that he made a proposal to the game-making world; make his game and he'll donate 10 grand to a charity. Funnily enough his game was a violent one, where some bloke goes round taking revenge on game manufacturers. Well, somebody did it (GTA mod) and now he's claiming that the proposal was satire. Yeah, great joke Jack. So the boys at Penny Arcade donated the 10 grand instead in his name.

EDIT: Seems as though his email address has been taken down, oh well. There is the postal address on one of those sites though.

To be fair, he entitled his challenge "A Modest Video Game Proposal", which you can't help but liken to Swift's "A Modest Proposal", which itself was pretty much a defining piece of satire.

I'm not defending him personally, but I think that the reader also has a responsibility to discern when something's earnest and when something's satire. Especially when it's slap-you-in-the-face obvious. I read the "challenge," and as far as I'm concerned, it was pretty cut and dried that he wasn't being earnest--you didn't have to make the title connection to realize that.

Yes, Jack Thompson is a fuckstain. There's no doubt to that. No, I don't think he has any valid points in his multitude of legal actions against the entertainment industry. However, just because someone's a fuckstain doesn't mean that you can take their words out of context.

I hear you, but I just think it's the worst thing he has done. Nobody can really takes him seriously when he's on a crusade against violent video games. It's just too harmless. It's like listening to Mike Tyson talk about his pain and how he is this |---| close to flipping out and killing everybody in the room. But you just don't even jokingly offer to donate money which you have no intention to give, to a charity.
