say you encode something at 128 with 2-Pass VRB. first of all its going to make a first pass to look at the freqencies of the song, then on the encoding pass it will use higher than 128 bit rates for parts of the song that have a lot of high end freqs, lower than 128 for parts that dont have much harmonics. the result is same size as a CBR 128 because lower than 128 for low freq parts, but better sounding because higher than 128 for high end parts. and WMA does VBR better than mp3

Overall Ratings: The results for each sample were grouped together, without modifications.

Then I performed an ANOVA analysis. The results are graphed below. Vorbis aoTuV is tied to Musepack at first place, Lame MP3 is tied to iTunes AAC at second place, WMA Standard is in third place and Atrac3 gets last place.

This test showed some very interesting developments since the last Multiformat at 128kbps test. Lame seems to have improved a lot, getting tied to it's technological successor AAC. Vorbis got much better, thanks to the independent tunings performed by Aoyumi. And Atrac3 surprised by it's bad performance.

For someone that claims to be a conspiracy nut, it is surprising that you would consent to using windows media. And that's not even counting how absolutely shitty of a format wma and wmv is. Nothing like hardly being able to scrub even in their HD offering, running scripts and including ads as a part of the file format. Fucking Tool.

And the thing is tone, no one wants to listen to a 64kbps mp3. If they can get good quality out of a universal 128kbsp mp3 rather than a partially compatible component, they would do so.

For someone of such HIGH INTELLECT about EVERYTHING, you would realize that WMA is the single worst encoder EVER. In the absense of data it puts random binary leaving a really metal sound.

Not the screen alone, no. It has other problems too. The DC battery charger port snapped off inside, so I had to remove that (unfixable). The OS freezes up sometimes as well, not to mention the buttons on the front are loose.

I have a Creative Zen Touch. There is a 20 GB version for 204 bucks on Amazon, and a 40 GB for 280 on amazon. It's possibly one of the best deals you will find as far as large capacity mp3 players go. The sound quality is pretty good if you get yourself a new pair of headphones.

There are, however, 2 downsides. The player is apt to "freezing" on me about 2 times a month. This is easily fixed with a pin, but it's a pain in the ass to rummage through my things looking for the safety pin I have.

Also, I use mine primarily in my car, so I often leave it there. Now I live in New Jersey, and it get's cold. When I leave it out in the cold overnight or for long periods of time, the touch screen tends to not respond. However, once I heat it up, the thing works good as new.

Overall I think my mp3 player is quite possibly one of the best ones on the market, as far as apple alternatives go.
