Also during the dark ages there was no real accurate date. There were many sources all with their own dates and years. The current date/year is actually an estimate because of that. It could actually be 2010 right now or 2001.

Dec 21 2012 is the end of the mayan long count calander. the mayans took note of how the milkyway galaxy shifts through the sky very slowly over many thousands of years. the precession of the equanox is a 26,000 year cycle, a wobble in the earth...every 26,000 years, the winter solstice sun aligns with the galactic equator, currently we are aligned with the equator, near the center of the galaxy, this is why the mayans targeted dec 21 2012. this is about the time where the alignment is complete and the solstice sun has passed entirely through the galactic equator.
