the gdp per capita is the amount of stuff bought in a country divided by the number of people. so, yes, you have the same amount of purchasing power approximately, but 50% of what your purchase is dictated by the government, whereas ours is significantly less.

I can't really make any valid claims on wich country is the richer or the better, or whatever.
