  • Tipping at bars

I was bored and reading some random thread somewhere about bar etiquette, and pretty much everyone who had posted had mentioned that you should try to tip about $1 per drink in a bar. This kinda baffled me, is it just an American thing? Personally I have never tipped for a drink in my life, why should I? It's not like they're doing me any particular extra service other than their job.

So I'm just wondering, does anyone here tip for drinks who is NOT in America or Canada?

Depends on the bar, service and country your in.

For example...last St. Patricks Day, which is usually a crazy evening for Bars, I tipped my bartender $10 on my first drink. Needless to say, I got a new pint every time my drink had been finished without a wait. This is a special situation, due to the extreme crowd and day/event it was. The bar was packed wall to wall!

At just a standard bar...average evening...no crowd. I usually throw a dollar per pint out if I get my drink in a timely manner. If I had to wait in an empty bar for the bartender to finish watching some crap on TV, then F'um and I wouldn't tip.

It all boils down to the service rendered. As for a Bartender at a Fridays or other franchised crap restaraunt....I would only tip them when I was leaving and not between drinks. At an actual Pub/Bar, that I frequent regularly...that's totatly different & usually I get food along with my drinks.

I only ever tip when I can't be bothered with the little change.

I tried to give a lapdancer a 50p tip once, but she just looked at it and laughed.

I don't think I've ever tipped in my life apart from not accepting small change. Tight? I dunno, but I don't have a whole lot of money to throw around.

I never tipped per say at a pub when I was in the UK or Italy.

In the States...as I am unsure about Canada, but here the servers rely on tip monies, as the salaries they get paid are usually minimum wage or less if part time. So they make up the difference in lack of wages with the tips.

If a meal at a restaraunt is over a certain amount of money, the grattitude or tip is usually calculated into the total price & the same goes for a dinner party of 7+ at a table.

To be just a bartender alone and solely basing the thought of tipping a bartender just for a beer alone and nothing else, would depend on the service and how well I know that bartender as well if it is a bar I like to frequent. Think about it though...at least for those working in the States as bartenders...you can be part time at $2.25 per hour and after 6 hrs. only get $13.50, yet you may make $100.00 in tips. Sometimes the tips are also split amongst the bartenders if more than one is working the bar itself.

in the crappy bars i visit i only tip when the waiter needs more than 30 seconds to find change and i am pissed off of him standing there, pretending not to find 2 coins. or when i am too drunk to count. or if she is totaly cute.

Depends. If the person who hands me the drink is friendly or not.
If he/she almost tosses my glass at me....fat chance.
Im a customer...serve me nicely and get a good tip.

I tip $1 per drink. If I'm being cheap I'll tip $1 per two drinks.

In New York, "tipped employees(like bartenders)" get paid like almost... $3 less an hour than normal minimum wage, because they depend on tips

Yeah... in restaurants, when you pay the bill, you are just paying for the food, not the service. The majority of the money waiters/waitresses make comes from tips, because they get paid hardly anything by the employeer. I don't know if this is true, but I remember someone saying that they once got a paycheck of $0 after deductions.

I have no idea if bartenders get paid the same way.

I got paid $3.16 as a server so yeah, tips mean a lot. The bartenders did get paid a bit more, though. Maybe like minimum wage, I can't remember.

As a customer I never tip.

When I worked in a bar, I got tipped all the time, had drinks bought for me etc.
