  • How to use the apostrophe (')

Disclaimer: This is only for those who don't know when to use apostrophes, and actually want to know. I personally don't have direct problems with general misuse.

    -----
    What is it?
The apostrophe is the following symbol: '

    -----
Why you might want to know:
Technically there is no need for correct english on forums and general (subspace) chat. At times, misuse of apostrophes can be a humour in itself. In case you were curious though, here is how you actually DO use apostrophes.. in case you might need to one day, e.g. filling in a form for a job, taking an english exam, making a decent advertisement for someone, etc.

    -----
    The basic rules:
The rules concerning the use of Apostrophes in written English are very simple:

    1. They are used to denote a missing letter or letters, for example:
    - I can't instead of I cannot
    - I don't instead of I do not
    - it's instead of it is

    2. They are used to denote possession, for example:
    - the dog's bone
    - the company's logo
    - Jones's bakery (but Joneses' bakery if owned by more than one Jones)

    -----
    Further reading:
The rules were copied from the website: The Apostrophe Protection Society. It contains more useful information if you are interested.

I just copied that from a website. Can you verify that it should be Jones'? Just so I know for sure..

Jones' or Jones's, both are acceptable within the English language however Jones' is more commonly used and is the version usually taught at schools.

Thanks, but I'm more looking for proof rather than opinion Something like a page from an english textbook or something. (not discrediting your intelligence here though, I have plenty of faith in ya)

How do you know both are acceptable within the English language?

                          To both:
Sorry about his 'how do you know??' stuff, but I've already heard many other people's opinion on this, it's like taking one person's word over another.

I don't know how you got this confused, but NOCKM is british. I'm Norwegian, and my name is Jonas, not Jones. So hmm...?

His example was talking about a family bakery, owned by the Jones family. It would therefore be Jones' bakery. Had nothing to do with you Jonas, sorry
