  • Sexual harrassment at work

    Alright here's the situation:

There's this guy at my work named Bob. He's about 10 years older than me and he's really pretty weird. Not only does he have schizophrenia, but he also has multiple personality disorder. Basically, he's always talking to himself and saying what he's thinking out loud.

The other day I was running the register and he was bagging the groceries for me. Of course while he's doing this, he's talking to "Joe" the whole time, and then he'll turn into "Joe" and talk back to Bob. This was the gist of his conversation:

    "Bob who's that?"
    "I don't know but she's pretty"
"Bob she probably has a boyfriend!"
"Wouldn't you like to get her in bed?"
"Bob stop it! She's too young for you!"
"I know but she's so nice!"
"Bob she's a cashier, let her do her work. She's really nice."
"Come on, why don't you ask her to be your girlfriend?"
"Bob we can't do that right now. We have to bag!"
"But I want to have sex with her!"
"We need to go home and feed the cats though tonight"
"But I don't want to! I want to bang her!"

And etc for over 20 minutes. I'm trying my hardest to keep a straight face, and the customers are mildly freaking out. Finally he left (after shaking my hand and thanking me) and all was well.

Well yesterday I walked into work just as he was leaving, and I hear him say "Stop thinking about that Bob! She's too young for you!" Needless to say, the way he said it freaked me out.

So what to do? Should I just ignore him the best I can or tell management? I'd hate to get him fired because he really doesn't know what he's saying. But he doesn't know what he's saying, or doing, so he might do something that's really out of line. On the other hand, he's really freaking me out to the point I don't even want to be at work when he is anymore.

WHAT TO DO?! Anyone else have experiences like this in any way, shape, or form?

You have your answer right there.Instead of waiting until a point where he randomly grabs your tit or something, you need to let management know right away. His job is not your main concern in this situation, how comfortable you feel at work, is. If he's freaking you out then you need to tell management and let them take care of him. Not doing something because you'e afraid of "rocking the boat" is not going to help yoru situation, and if "Joe" or "Bob" or whoever he wants to be for the day doesn't see you complain, he might eventually take it as a green light and try something.

I'm not trying ot use scare tactics on you but it's better to be safe than sorry. Think about yourself first when it comes to situations like these.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

Talk to a manager about it like Liquid Blue said. It is another personality he is exhibiting, an entirely different person and if he can't control it one day because he seems to be fighting his urges then he could attack you or a customer. It's not good that he is saying it out loud or bundling these urges into a different personallity all together. It's hard to tell if he's harmless or if he's bullshitting or just doing it in a friendly/joking way but your safety and peace of mind is more important and well worth "rocking the boat".

my opinion is you need to tell management. not only to protect yourself but to protect others. i mean, maybe other people are way more sensitive than you to this stuff, or maybe he'd be a lot louder with others.

the other thing is that it isn't healthy for him to be living without proper treatment for this stuff, and proper treatment requires accurate information about how he's living. you know what i'm saying?

go tell management, it'll be best for you, for the customers and for him.

There's obviously only one solution to this... You're gonna have to have sex with him. Then he'll shut up... and he probably hasn't gotten laid in a while, so it's also doing him a favor. It's like two birds with one stone... Three if you count yourself getting some action, too. Of course, don't tell anyone, because it may be slightly illegal. Who knows, maybe having sex with him would be like a threesome.

If he is fired, my concern would be what his next move could take? Would he stalk you? wait for you after work? Not to sound like doom and gloom, but if he has a split personality.....which personality would or could come out on top from his disorder? Would Joe come out or would Bob.

That's a really odd situation to be in and one that I do not think can have a simple conclusion. Sounds like a script from a Law and Order.

The company HAS to make sure the work environment is not 'hostile'. This includes making sure the Employee Handbook defines a hostile environment and what it expects from it's employees.
Although there could be a 'grey' area if this person is handicapped, the bottom line is that the company is totally responsible for making sure the working environment is not hostile or threatening to anyone. Take this to the manager and let him make a decision.

What would worry me is what happens outside of work when your leaving. He may be harmless, and at the same time with the disorder you mention, if fired he could become obsessive and stalk you from outside the work environment.

Weird situation to be in...have dated a few wack job women in my day that I would swear had multiple personalities, but it is so different for a guy.

This is an appropriate way to resolve a problem in the workplace, yet it should be done with your manager or HR person present in a private office.

If this fails, at least it was documented. Do not try and talk to him without your manager or HR person present. It should be discussed and resolved and at least made record of.
