Just thought I would rant on the recent achievement that the House of Rep.'s made in giving themselves another "annual" pay raise.
You see it is possible for both parties to work hand in hand with one another, as long as it is to benefit themselves and not the country. Why share with the people of whom you represent in Washington? This is in regards to the House of Representatives voting yet once again to give themselves annual pay raises. With the national minimum wage being $5.15, one can only wonder with the increased costs of living in the past two presidential terms, why the minimum wage has not increased? Why do the elected officials require yearly pay increases, when we have a growing poverty class, as well as a vanishing middle class in our nation. These are the same elected offices that are here to represent the peoples that put them in office, yet it seems that every day we get a new story on how the government and it's elected officials turn a blind eye from the reality of the nations peoples & problems in general.
The United States poverty levels are increasing as our jobs are shipped overseas, interest rates rising with gas & oil prices forcing the average and below average worker and family to change their work environments and job status in many situations. More and more average Americans are taking on second jobs, of which many are paid under the table, just so that they can put food on the table, heat their homes and have gas in the tank and avoid the good ol' government from taking taxes out of it.
So many workers that strike for just a small piece of what many in the government take for granted. Wouldn't it be great if Teachers could just get together and decide on giving themselves raises every year? Every fall when school starts again, it seems that there are at least 2 - 6 school districts in my area (Philadelphia) that strike for better wages. This only hurts the children and our education systems. Teachers cannot just vote on giving themselves raises, the School Board must review this and arbitrate over issues until it can be resolved.
What the House of Rep.'s need, as well as all branches, are a non profit group of average Americans from all walks of life to be the Governments School Board so to say and decide if they reached the merits acceptable for having a pay raise!
It's easy for the Fed to decide if a States education system will get monies needed to educate children, as long as the test scores are at a certain acceptable test level (no child left behind is such crap), yet if we held the Federal Government under the same scrutiny, wouldn't it be nice to not allow these parasites pay raises and perhaps cut's in benefits? Wouldn't it also be nice for the taxpayers of this country to be able to decide on a national vote, to reduce our taxes? If an official can decide on giving him/herself more money, why can't we as a nation decide on taking it away from them? Just voting them out, is not a feasible and economical means to do this. The peoples of this nation should have a national vote to allow for adjustment to the minimal wage of this country and it should be in line with all the economic factors that dictate to the cost of living. This should not be up to a vote amongst elected parties anymore, as they only have one concern & that would seem to be their own personal bank accounts!
There really is no difference between a crook and a politician...it has been said for hundreds of years and yet it will always stand true.
Lou Dobbs on cnn.com notes the following:
The House Appropriations Committee has passed a $2.10 increase as part of a spending bill, but the business lobby pressured the House leadership to hold up the measure.
"I think it's disgraceful that we waited nine years to do this," says Rep. David Obey, a Democrat from Wisconsin. "We have seen gas prices go up by 140 percent since the minimum wage was increased. We have seen home heating oil go up by 120 percent. We have seen health care go up by almost 45 percent."
This administration, our Republican-led Congress and the dominant corporate interests in this country want cheap labor. And to achieve that goal they're outsourcing middle-class jobs, importing illegal labor and cutting retirement and health-care benefits.
It's time for the federal government to reverse the trend, to at least substantially raise the minimum wage in this country, and by doing so express how much we value all working Americans.

We really need this country to take away the lobbyists power, as an individual has nothing backing them, unless they have a lobbyist group representing them....frankly I thought that was the job of the elected official?
