In the military some people would paint their combat boots a certain color to represent what they thought of their enlistment. Painting the boots acted as their passage to 'freedom', since they would no longer have to slave over polishing their boots for half an hour every night. Some would toss them over power lines, others would bury them. I think that tradition was stupid though, and I kept mine because they were perfectly good boots.
