You shouldn't think of it as Ledger trying to be better than the original joker, just think of it as another version. I think the movie will be badass personally, considering how fucking good the last one was.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.
I didn't like Nicholson's Joker that much. I thought he did a good job playing a villain, but he wasn't Joker-y enough for my liking. Jack was more of a bad-ass than a madman. The Joker was always the one villain that got under Batman's skin and brought him close to considering murdering the Joker, but I didn't feel that in the first film. I think they added the bit about Joker (or Jack Napier, as he was known then) killing the Waynes to provide that personal edge between them, but that still wasn't good enough for me.
No, it was a petty crook named Joe Chill who Bruce Wayne tried to shoot in Batman Begins. The Joker in the comics was about the same age as Batman, so for him to have killed Bruce Wayne's parents, he'd have to had been a kid himself at the time too, which wouldn't really fit.
heath ledger is a good enough actor to play the joker, i think. i just saw the patriot, and boy was he awesome in that. really, though, i think to be a good actor in a movie like this you just need to follow the direction well.
i normally dont like superhero movies but i loved batman begins, so if this new one gets good reviews i might actually go see it in theaters.
5:gen> man
5:gen> i didn't know shade's child fucked bluednady
I thought the emotional parts in The Patriot with Heath Ledger were laughable. I guess he didn't do a terrible job a la Keanu Reeves or Colin Farrell but I don't see him as a threatening villain. The guy that did Scarecrow was good so I was hoping for better.

Check out the really old shit, Batman has shot plenty of guys in his time.

The earlier Batman film with Jack Nicholson as the Joker took some liberties with the Batman cannon
I don't really know a ton about Batman, but I'm pretty sure she was created just for the animated series, so she probably won't make it to the movie if the filmmakers don't see that series as part of the Batman canon, as TK suggests.
P.S. I know TK hates it when people take liberties with his cannon.
I am really excited to see this. I like Nolan's unique direction. Casting Heath Ledger seemed odd at first, but at least I know that it's not just to milk out money for casting big superstars, or at least I hope that it's not. Not to get off topic but Nolan has this new movie coming out called The Prestige. Looks awesome.
