  • Hmm, what's wrong with my PSU?

My computer started rebooting after a few minutes of use today. After a while it just completely shut down and wouldn't turn on. I had to wait a while and it turned back on. Am I not getting enough juice in my system? Whoever is good with PSUs, please take a look at my power input and identify the problem. Thanks.

52C is definitely too high. You might be burning the CPU in there, causing it to shut down and resume when it cools off. I don't think it has anything to do with the PSU.

Did you overclock the CPU? Have you ever cleaned your machine out (fans, etc?) How long has the proc been burning at over 50C?

As everyone has said, your temperature is dangerous to your precious hardware. The video card likes to heat up first and will prompt the computer to either shut down or restart when it's feeling rather toasty. Get new fans, or a cheap new tower, you can get a very nice one (which could last you up through your next hardware upgrade) for under 100 dollars. If you have a choice, 120mm fans are the way to go, the larger the fan and slower the fan speed, the cooler, less noisy, and more energy efficient your computer will be.

I built a computer for my nephew this summer who's off at college now, and I used this case ($65):

                    http://www.xionusa.com/product-case-Xion2.html

It may look a bit over the top, but when it came, I was (at least) impressed with how sleek it looks up close. It's simple, nothing extravagant like those aluminum cases with water cooling and jet engines, but it's great for its price. The most important part of this case, aside from his price constraint, and also the reason I was able to find it (zipzoomfly.com) was because of the dual 120mms and side ventilation I had been searching for. How is the large piece of plastic working you wonder? Uncle James hasn't recieved a call about someone's PNY GeForce 7900GT overheating, so I assume it's working wonderfuly. Anyway, you probably know all of this seeing as you have personal monitoring devices built in (Antec?). I'd definitely invest in a new tower if you're having overheating problems, because there's a good chance that there isn't enough ventilation in the first place, thus a fan might not help.

As for me, this beauty has treated me well for months now. UT2k4 anyone? http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-810SKN1

Moved to the sub-forum no one reads... okay I don't blame you.

My CPU temp has always been over 60C. Usually in high usage it goes above 70C. And everything has been fine for 4 years.

Yikes, I read the picture completely wrong. However, like I said before, if your concern is temp, it's most likely the temperature of your video card that's restarting your computer. Depending on the card, they can be very picky about temperatures, and unfortunately tend to have a lower maximum temperature than your chip will.

Max temp varies depending on CPU.

Well on idle it stays around mid to high 50s, when lots of apps are open it goes into the 60s and when 3D gaming it peaks the 70s. I don't know because I've been using this for 3 weeks now and didn't have a problem till now.

50 c is alright. Its no biggy if it is around 50-58. As long as it stays on 58 under.

To state the obvious, if you don't have a fan, get one. I have a artic cooler on my graphics card R9800PRO(can be overclocked to a XT). My cpu has a 12inch? fan with a windtunnel between the fan and the cooler for the CPU, overclocked to 2.2ghz from 1.8.

I also have a panel that allows me to increase the voltage for my fan. If it is too hot, I increase the voltage for more power and RMPS/RPS?. Though I have it always on 5volt on the big fan. I have 4 fans fro my computer exluding the graphicscard one. Every fan controlable with the panel installed.

If you are hardcore enough, get a watercooling system for your computer, if you want it to be silent. Fans don't cost much, nor the artic cooler system or the panel where you can ctrl your fans and increase volts to different fans.

                              piece of cake.
                              Endless space, endless exploration.
