When the Columbine Shootings happened over here however, there was a huge outcry by both Canadians and Europeans using this tragic event to justify their own prejudiced opinions about Americans; namely, how savage and barbaric Americans are and how school shootings were a product of this "American mentality" of barbarism and wanton violence which was somehow enflamed by a lack of gun-control.

Gun control is another issue to this. My view is that the problem has to be solved, not taking guns out of the equation (it's a touchy issue that won't be resolved here or anywhere on this forum) but the problem of kids feeling more detached from society, highschool is a fucking wasteland and kids are being at a faster rate pulled into these fundamentalist groups and adopting violent and anti-social outlooks on life. School shootings and gun violence in general happen more in the US because of social and economic disparity. A lot of the fear is propetuated by the media, it's just that terrorism, hurricanes, the middle east.. I could go on, is more in the minds of Americans and people around the world then the common fear of some kid going nuts and shooting up his school. The solution is complex but what I know is that more restrictions like forcing kids not to bring iPods to school, cell phones or setting up metal detectors, forced searches and all that crap will not help.

If you want to claim that people took advantage of the Columbine shooting to justify their opinion of American society I would equally say this thread is in bad taste.
