I'm going to agree with Displaced... why mod it? it's not going to ever be a high performance car unless you dump a ton of money into it, just drive it and be happy that it runs.

However, I strongly disagree with iKillburger's reasoning for not modding it by suggesting that a 4 banger can't be high performance... they can, just not this one.

And since I didn't have to pay for it, I am keeping it.

yea makes sense

nah, getting more air mixed in with the fuel means more combustion, thereby reducing fuel consumption

edit: though i think it only works on certain scenarios. for instance, my honda passport (isuzu rodeo rebadged) has an OEM intake designed for offroad, so it was really restrictive. bought an aftermarket intake cone and i definitely have more response and throttle, and my gas bills have dropped by $15. (my fuel gauge is broken so i have to fill up, go to about 350 miles on the trip odometer, and refill. this used to be $55, it's now $40.)

kinda like i had this ford focus that got 34 mpg

and now i have a 01 trans am ram air ws6 with an ls1 350 with over 410 hp that gets 7 mpg

No. the combustion happens after the fuel has been sprayed into the chamber. it doesn't use more gas, just makes better use of what's there.

As fuel efficiency is related to the complete combustion per fuel molecule in order to get the most energy out of each unit of fuel, the air intake plays a significant role. Keeping a vehicle's air intake clean and free from obstruction and replacing it's air filter regularly will benefit efficiency. Installing an aftermarket intake that allows a greater and freer airflow can increase fuel efficiency depending on the vehicle. A lifetime air filter (such as K&N, Barry Grant, AEM Dryflow, etc.) will eventually save its own cost and more since it doesn't require replacement. Certain vehicles respond better to higher flowing filters than others, depending on the quality level of factory engineering.
