            American History X
            Matrix I
            Saving Private Ryan
            LOTR
            Forrest Gump
            Gladiator
            The Green Mile

I know, that are 7 movies not 5.. but I cannot pick between them right now.
Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

              The Royal Tenenbaums
              The Life Aquatic
              Donnie Darko
              Pulp Fiction
Requiem for a Dream (although I enjoyed the book more, but not as much as Last Exit to Brooklyn)

from dusk till dawn - the most brilliant movie without story
Sixth Sense - it was so obvious, jet no1 has seen it come. best twist
amelie - i just love to watch it
Memento - it has been done before, but this film is a new form of art made possible by movies
Full Metal Jacket - my war/anti war film pick, because it is important to remind people

                2004+
Sin City - best movie after a comic

7, fight club and schindlers list along with other great films i could not list, they focus to much at the story, i think a cult movie is not made out of storyline.

i was going to put some of those, they're all terrific films--but i wouldnt label them 'classics.' Popular cult films rarely make the cut. Pulp fiction, of course, is the exception

They could be of any national origin, and any complexion (IE Documentary, Avant-Garde etc. etc.). The only catch was that one had to be made after 2004. I chose:

                    Do the Right Thing
                    Pulp Fiction
                    City of God
                    Schindler's List
and The Departed (my choice for post-2004)

So, my question is, given the same choice what would you choose, and if you want, why? Or, just debate my movies and why they should or shouldn't be up there. Point is, I'm a little burned out from writing, and up to have some discussion about my favorite topic....MOVIES!

                    Discuss away.

your avatar is for the movie requim for a dream but its not on your list, go figure

edit: also pulp fiction isnt a materpiece by any design, in fact snatch and lock stock etc etc type films are all very very... required tastes. In fact almost all the movies you listed were more artsy type movies, so how are they considered masterpieces if they dont appeal to the casual viewer?

i would add saving private ryan, forest gump, shawshank redemption stuff like that in my list. not nearly as artsy but it appeals to every generation

Yeah, I know, but those I listed are virtually flawless and will be watched with the same vigor fifty years from now.

Donnie Darko is a piece of shit. Piece of SHIT. Go try to be Slaughterhouse-Five on someone else's time.

Life Aquatic is ok for a Wes Anderson flick, but shadows in comparison to Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore.

Anything he touches is gold but Royal Tenenbaums is the best, even though I constantly laugh during Life Aquatic. And comparing Donnie Darko to Vonnegut is like passing off Pulp Fiction as glamourized Faulkner. They are beautiful in their own ways (and Billy Pilgrim, as magical as he is, fails to provoke the catharsis I achieve each and every time I watch the movie).
