  • DS Games?

There have been many fantastic additions to the DS catalog and I was just wondering if you guys have stumbled across some scintillating sleepers. I'm mostly interested in games that make full use of all the touch/talk features, such as that new Trauma game or Pheonix Wright. Lots of times these games are bizarrely eclectic and fun yet don't get fab reviews because they aren't perfect (and who can trust reviewers these days with all the "advertisement" money?). So, what games are you guys asking for this holiday season or have already and think more people should be playing it?

P.S. I only have the New Super Mario Bros. so far and I'm looking to expand my library a few choice titles that would make me not regret buying this little handheld toy in a world of blue rays.

I've thought about that but something tells me I'd be done with it in about ten hours. And they have Avril Lavigne on the soundtrack.

Contact is a bit of a sleeper. It's made by the people behind Earthbound and has a similar design. It's not exactly a traditional console RPG, and in many aspects, it's a bit of a satire. It also breaks the fourth wall a bit. You don't actually play one of the main characters. Instead, a scientist in an alternate dimension contacts you through the DS. He needs your help to guide the main character who resides in a third dimension. You use the touch screen to guide that character in his quest. The AI controls him which some may find frustrating, but if you like something different, it's worth a look.

Of course, the blockbuster for the DS this season is Final Fantasy III, the last game in the series to be officially translated and ported to North America. I've enjoyed it so far. In the hype for it, a game that fell a bit under the radar is one from SquareEnix's OTHER franchise, Rocket Slime, a spin-off from the Dragon Quest series. It's a simple game and does have a younger target audience, but there's some genius in the simplicity. It's a simple action game broken up with battles between two massive tanks. The tanks are huge monstrosities with large cannons, and they're designed to look like various signature DQ monsters like the golem and dragons. Oh, and the tanks stand about ten yards away from each other. The fun part is picking up objects and firing them at the enemy. Even better is picking up your opponents and firing them out of their own cannons.

You know I saw that cover for Contact and thought it looked intriguing but I really didn't look into it until you mentioned it. I played through Earthbound for the first time this summer and was completely blown away by it's out-of-the-box quirkiness. Thanks for the pick.

As far as FFIII goes, I'm not sure I could go back to the excessive battles I hear plague your party every three steps. Maybe I've just played too many RPGs or too much Warcraft but I want to pull out my hair when I'm trying to explore a dungeon and lose my bearings because someone thought more battles increased difficulty. I can barely stand post-FF7's battle frequency, and those are considered mild in comparison to the earlier titles. I haven't played many DQ games and Rocket Slime does seem like it would be entertaining but a buddy of mine said it was far too easy and he's not exactly Ben Stein.

Have you played Metroid Prime: Hunters, Nintendogs, or Big Brain Academy?

                  Megaman ZX

never played any other megaman so i dont know whats knew and whats old, but in this one, you can use like a ton of different badass biometals.

it doesnt use the DS's touch-screen feature alot (about as much as Super Mario) but the one cool thing is- one of the weapons you get, a double-buster cannon, you can edit the flight path of the bullets (left and right) via the screen. So, for instance, one of the guns goes up a bit and then forward, and the other goes straight up. lets me shoot airbornes and things on cliffs.

Big Brain Academy and Brain Age are basically like the same game. But I recommend them because for a game about learning, they are both very addictive.

Metriod Prime: Hunters is great for multi player. The single player story sucks but it is badass when you have any number of friends, 1v1, 2v2, FFA, it's good shit all around. A tip would be to turn the aiming sensitivity down though, it was hard for me to turn with it up at 5,6 sensitivity. Another thing about it is it's great even with single-cart play; with Mario Kart you can't choose your character unless you have the cart and there are only a small number of stages open up. With Hunters, you can't choose your character, but that doesn't matter since you can still own as Samus, and there are 21 stages to choose from regardless of how many people have carts.

Mario Kart DS is fun, but single-cart play is very limiting. If you get it and like it, and plan to play it alot with multi-player, you will need to get multiple carts. Otherwise it's not nearly as fun as single-player.

The New Super Mario Bros. has a great single-player, and lots of mini-games for multiplay. Only problem is all the multi-player games are 1v1.

Nintendogs sucks, unless you plan to turn that bad boy on every damn day and walk your fucking dog. Otherwise the bastard turns into a disobedient mess that likes to piss on the sidewalk whenever it feels like it.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

If you liked Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time was pretty satisfying, even if it was basically superstar saga redux.
Creager will spit on my children for saying this, but Kirby's Cursed Canvas was quite enjoyable.
I'm still playing Mario 64 DS, but if you've played the original, the lack of an analog stick will drive you nuts. They almost solved it quite ingeniously using the touch screen, but not quite.

I've heard wonderful things about Contact and Lost in Blue. As soon as I am not broke, I'll be picking up both.
