being a car nut, i can tell you ive never driven an american "performance" car that can handle, not once.

camaros, corvettes, mustangs, chargers, chevelles, not one of them can be called a car that has any handling characteristics.

american cars, cant handle, never will.

the best handling yankee ive driven was a late 2004 plate Z06, which i could chuck around somewhat, but compare that to something as simple as a Clio 172 Cup, and the corvette feels like a tractor.

sure its faster 0-100, and sure it sounds a lot meatier, but driving down the twisties id be willing to bet a 172 cup would take your 481bhp pos.

      Negative!

please dont tell me you're serious with 200hp

i also have a 2003 SVT ford focus and it handles very well being that its lowered with eibach springs and yokohama tires, i know a car like the cup can handle but i find it hard to believe u would be going faster around such curves or windy roads, but ive never seen or driven one so i guess i dont know

its my wifes car but oh well, looks just like this except with 17" black giovanni wheels i have the same hood design but its carbon fiber and ricaro seats, all k&n intake and shit with magnaflow exhaust, my TA shakes the ground, hard.

i am very serious, i dont mean a road with one bend in it, i mean some winding backcountry road in the middle of nowhere, with hardly any straights.

the cup with 172bhp is rock solid, i can push it into corners hard with no fear that the back is gonna give out, or that i cant get it back if i push it over its limits.

my daily driver is a V5 golf, its not a performance car by any means, its not "fast" and it handles like a van with the stock suspension setup.

some small engine mods later, ECU, Pistons, Camshaft, Smoothed Airbox, its a lot more responsive, and i can put down the power from 1700rpm all the way to 5.5k.

having changed all the standard arbs and strut braces, as well as the stock suspension setup and bushes to koni's and powerflex bushes it actually handles pretty well, (its not where i want it to be, but i dont have the money to finish it atm) well enough that ive pushed it down a small forest road (paved) at 215kmh, slowing down to 160/180 for some of the corners that i didnt have the balls for at higher speeds.

ive also "rallied" with it down another forest road a bit further down the road, nothing "insane", but a good 60-90kmh down a narrow, winding dirt road with nothing but trees to catch me if i fuckup, the other summer i pushed it a little too hard in an inclined left turn, took it at ~73, when i normally take it at around 60, back threw out on me, luckily i was able to get it back before it was too late.

now, i like american cars, ive been very close to buying a 72 chevelle ss, and a 71 charger R/T, anyone who knows me knows id love a 7.0l stingray, but that doesnt change the fact that they arent cars that handle well.

LOL American handles better than others...that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard

"im sorry but whatever he has doesnt compare to an american sports car" Typical American attitude not even knowing what you're comparing to but calling yours better.

On a side note, they aren't called muscle cars because they handle well.

quite frankly, any car can be made to handle. but once you hit a certain speed, it doesn't matter - unless your tires are glued to the road, you're gonna go flying. i think a chevelle could be made to handle as well as a <insert euro car named after a quaint one or two syllable noun>... but you guys are comparing apples and oranges. maybe it's a cultural thing - here in america, the Land of Open Roads, it's all about speed. (someone quote Ricky Bobby here, guys).

Lol, funny you bring up the Focus, cause that's what I drive while my dad drives the Mustang

As for handling? Umm.... it's passable. It can handle enough for its own power cause the WS-6 package was made specifically for that weight, horsepower, gear ratio, etc*.

My dad and I go on Canyon runs in the Mustang and we haven't died, yet. So that's saying a bit of something.

sure cars can be made to handle.

but american "sports cars", are designed for one thing, and one thing only, flat out, pedal to the metal, straight bomb runs.

while european cars are desigend to be driven down twisty backwater roads as fast as humanly possible.

yes its apples to oranges, i dont see the point in boasting about 481bhp in a transam, because in "the real world" (not some 10 lane highway bombrun, but a normal street somewhere), that 481 bhp is wasted as it cant be put to use properly, hence a better handling, lower powered car will win out in the real world.

this has been tested more than once in the real world when mr local with his 5.7l v8 lumina ss, wants to race at the traffic lights, his 350bhp will rape my 190, every day.

same mr local is all cocky from our previous engagement down the road, and wants to race again, this time on a small 2 laned road down to shj.college, its got bends in it, hes trying and trying to push his car as fast as it can go into these bends and taking them sideways, im laughing at him because even with almost double my hp, he cant keep up, its the same thing if you want to go fast in traffic, its not the bhp, its the handling of your car. (there are exceptions, porsche's, ferraris, etc, handle well with insane amounts of power, but id call them as "supercars", not "performance cars".)

the traffic light bonanza isnt a show of "real world" performance. (imo)

Displaced, are you driving around curves like in your avatar?

My opinion is that there are different 'joys' of driving a car. I happen to get a woody when sitting in a beefy, throaty, V-8 with rear wheel drive. Straight line acceleration, lighting up the rear tires, weeeeeeee.
But sometimes it's huge fun to drive the mountain roads around me in a high-revving screamer begging me to find the limits of my driving ability.

These ‘joys’ can be considered mutually exclusive. Finding them in the same vehicle can be more expensive than simply having more than one car.

i agree eph, im not saying that the only joy to be had in a car is to round the twisties with your balls in your throat.

if that were true, i wouldnt have been close to buying some american muscle car, i too love the sound of a V6 or a V8, (which is the reason ive got a V5 currently and not a inline 4, it sounds like a very special v6, and i just cant get enough of the sound it makes) and i too do partake in the traffic light rallye if i have a car that is capable of doing the 0-60 in 5 seconds.

all im saying is i dont understand the need to boast about BHP in a car where you cant get the power down on anything other than a straight line.
