New Study Shows: "Marijuana the Largest Cash Crop in U.S."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- U.S. growers produce nearly $35 billion worth of marijuana annually, making the illegal drug the country's largest cash crop, bigger than corn and wheat combined, an advocate of medical marijuana use said in a study released Monday.

The report, conducted by Jon Gettman, a public policy analyst and former head of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, also concluded that five U.S. states produce more than $1 billion worth of marijuana apiece: California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington.

Medical marijuana is sold here in California...there seem to be new clinics (or as they say in Northern Cali, "clubs", which dispense said medical marijuana) popping up all the time. Within the past 3 months I can name at least 10 new clinics within a 15 mile radius of my home. Everyone I know who smokes pretty much has a medical card, being that it's so easy to find a doctor who you can give 200 bucks and have him give you one. In this sense, the government IS taxing and regulating it's sale. However, those stupid bastards either don't realize or just can't stop the fact that about 50% of these medical marijuana buyers do not even really smoke much of their purchases...it's resold with a huge markup. I know idiot kids who will pay 30 bucks a gram for bud because it came from the clinic and has a cool name like "Bubba Kush x Power Plant". If the government was smart they would've started legalizing weed and selling it through clinics years and years and years ago. They will never stop the sale and intake of weed, but they can sure as hell make good money by legalizing it and taxing the sale at clinics.
