Don't sweat it... this certainly looks like more of a self-confidence issue more so than anything. Your friends are your friends for a reason, don't let your presumptions of what they think about you dictate your hapiness. In the end it's about what you want and what you expect of yourself.... I know you're dissapointed that you didn't get into UConn, but in the big scheme of things, that's nothing. You live in a country of limitless opportunity, keep your chin up lad.

I am going to end up at Southern or a community college, and I'm not extremely upset at that. It's just that in the upper-level of students, most of which I am forced to interact with on a daily basis, Southern isn't even a safety school. It's a joke. But then again, so is someone getting deferred from UConn. Oh well, I just don't know what to do right now.

I wanna thank you all for all your kind words, and I don't want to sound like I'm whining, but I know I am, so I'll apologize right now for that. I'm trying to deal with what's being dealt, so I beg you to bare (bear?) with me as I worry and fret and be confused.
How many schools are you applying to? I wouldn't worry about Yale, as they take less than 10% of the applicants anyway. Were they reasonable (reach school or less) for you? If so, its weird that you didn't get into UConn as a safety. I'm not very familiar with UConn, but maybe they assumed it was a safety for you and that you likely wouldn't go there? Don't let college letters dictate how you feel about yourself. I go to private school with a lot of smart and rich kids (15% of my class applies early to Yale), but most of them still don't get in. The most successful people that I know personally went to community colleges and worked their asses off, so don't be ashamed of going to one of your less desired schools; its no measure of your intelligence. I'm a senior too, but I haven't sent in my Yale app yet (I know, its getting late... -_- )

The thing is that everyone is going somewhere completely different, so I'm pretty much on my own in terms of location.

There aren't community colleges in the same area as your friends' private schools?

Dude, don't even worry about it. It doesn't matter where you START at school, just where you finish. Get a good GPA at community college (hell, pick one somewhere fun where you've got a lot of friends) and then transfer to UCONN. You'll save money doing that to boot.

I'm not quite sure what other schools you looked at, but as LB suggested, UConn isn't neccesarily the school to be applying to for Philosophy. If you're taking AP classes, I'm sure you're bright enough to get into a lot of schools that are great for liberal arts. I know you don't really want to go to Southern or UNH or what not, but it may be for the best to go for a year with transfering in mind. You could certainly kick ass there, and transfering is SOOOO much easier than trying to get in somewhere initially. Again, you still have time for regular admission for a lot of places... hell, if you want to take a semester off, work a little and perhaps take a class or two at a CC, that may be all you need.

Lizard, I've lived in East Lyme for most of the latter portion of my life.... I dropped out of college (Lehigh) when I was 19, moved to Ct, started a new life and now (10 years later) I'm taking courses at Avery Point to finish my degree. I'll be commuting to Storrs this summer, and if everything goes according to plan, I'll have my degree by next December

And it's really no suprise to find a bunch of kids on here, or anywhere online that go to UConn. It's one of the fastest growing public universities in the country.

But anyhow, yes Paul, there is Southern. But I really don't want to go to Southern. I don't understand why I was deferred really, but whatever. I didn't expect to even get in Yale, but its an automatic application process if you are in AP Classes at my school. I'm the only one in my school to get deferred from UConn thus far, so I pretty much feel like a white guy at the Apollo.

I did apply to schools outside of CT though, a lot of Massachusetts schools, but their requirements are harder to get in than UConn, so fuck that. I'm pretty much fucked over for life at this point.

That's what I get for being a Philosophy major, I suppose.
Shame, no SS- sounds like you need to steal a PC~

Anyhoo, you're life isn't fucked over, it's just on a different route from what you initially had planned. Like Peej said, I would go to a community college for a bit and then head over to UConn. Do you know anyone else that's a philosophy major that got into UConn? If not then that might be your problem right there, maybe there is another major that you wouldn't mind doing, that is more widely accepted.

I know you're bummed out but you can't let this setback throw your life into complete disarray, what life gives you changes all the time- how you let it affect you is what's important.

There are only a hand full of studies you can not get accepted for at any uni here. Such as meds, they have limited student acceptance. But for any other uni, you just apply with the right diploma and you're in.

Who wants to go to Yale anyway, so much rich boys and girls. I mean, if George W. Bush can graduate from Yale, anyone can.
