    Cash for Cartoons!

    i've been recently inspired to begin submitting original cartoons to publications--Readers Digest, MAD, and (dare i say it?) The New Yorker. The chances of having a cartoon published are slim to none, but there's some good money in it for the lucky guy who gets his in.

    So what i'm wondering is: does anybody else have a similar interest? Original ideas? any sort of background, any input, etc? i know you bastards have the tendency to derail a thread from its orginal topic--but i'd like to keep it pretty focused--feel free to post idea's/roughs. MS paint doodles welcome! as soon as i get some idea's together i'll post them to get some feedback. i know i can count on you to provide a completely objective and critical audience!

    I wanted to draw cartoons for the newspapers when I was little, a la Calvin and Hobbes, but around 6th-7th grade I realized it's really fucking hard to consistently come up with funny material, so I turned my interests in other areas of drawing.

    I'm guessing you mean political cartoons? What type of cartoons have you done so far, and how have you tried to get your name out there?
    My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

      not necessarily political...and while i LOVE calvin and hobbes, i was thinking more along the lines of Far Side. a single panel cartoon: drawing and caption...you can completely change the subject matter every time...it is fucking hard to get funny stuff, but whatever...i had shit in the school newspaper in high school and all that (which means absolutely nothing) but i'm trying to get a set of ones i like before i start submitting them..maybe start with local newspaper then readers digest..i havent really thought that part through yet :-p. i'll post when i have some drawn out that i feel are worth sharing

        Yeah, start with a portfolio of sorts and by submitting to local newspapers. If you ever want to get some in the New Yorker it might be good to have a resume of sorts and some extra material to show them (not that I'm an expert on cartoons or anything )

          That's cool. Definitely have a focus before you start showing your work to any newspapers, it's good that you know exactly which kind of comic you want to do.

          I'm not exactly sure as to how you could best present your work to some newspapers, but I'm sure you can find some info online, or in a library nearby that can help you fine tune your selection. Also, make sure to mix it up with some color pieces as well as black and white, just so you can give the employer an idea of how your stuff will look on Sundays.

            ikm: its always good to have a portfolio no matter what--but i think if i'm looking for a permanent position i'll wait till i finish school . as it is, the new yorker recieves hundreds of cartoon submissions a weak from hopefuls and amature cartoonists. i have a while to refine my work/humor.

            Anywho, here is piece number one. i just happened to find the doodle as i was browsing old sketchbooks--its not necessarily typical of 'my work' but the fact that it's in such bad taste made me chuckle.

                  Scurvy, I can tell you there are PLENTY of forums and online communities specifically for this. Do some research, it may not be as easy as just googling, and some places may require a small entrace fee. I can tell you, there are some very talented (and even published) cartoonists on the SomethingAwful forums... although I don't think that may be the first place to look.

                      thanks paul...i guess i'll look into it some more. aside from this, i'm not really active on forums in general, but it sounds interesting..

                      lol phatass--obviously that crossed my mind, but occasionally people pick up my sketchbook and just go through it...that could be hazardous.
