You take things out of context. If you look at the whole book in which Solomon wrote, you'll notice that the book is full of goads and nails. Anyway, Solomon is basically calling that a person be content with what God has provided, rejoicing in whatever circumstances that occur. He's not saying, lets eat and drink for tomorrow we die. You can't indulge in your lusts, and expect God to work in your life by compromising all standards to satisify your desires and pleasures. Anything you eat or drink which takes power over you (alcohol and drugs) is an abomination to the Lord. As well, our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, not the temple of our lusts, thus the Holy Spirit must be in control, not these external substances. Finally, our body belongs to God, thus we must forefit everything to His glory and praise. We can't purposefully destroy our bodies with things like alcohol, which can cause so much death and harm to our bodies.

There are many verses which tell of the dangers and the tribulations of drinking. I personally don't feel a Christian should drink any alcohol for a few reasons.

For one, personal testamony is important in the Christian's life. Christ has called all Christians to be unlike the world, to seperate from the world (not a physical seperation into isolation like the Amish, but a seperation that we are to be in the world, but not of the world.) Thus, our lives should be as Christ to the world, and when you have things like alcohol present in your life, then you create a stumbling block to those unsaved people, as they don't see a difference in the Christian, but just similarities.

Secondly, the power of alcohol is dangerous, and many who claim to just drink alcohol but not get drunk, do get drunk, or are very vulnerable to getting drunk. Why put yourself at the risk? Every drunk started with 1 drink, and if you put yourself into a position to get drunk, you probably will fall under the temptation. As well, look how many families have been ruined because of alcohol, why would you want to play around with something so devistating? Its just foolishness.

Thirdly, the Bible records people drinking wine on several occasions, yet this is no excuse that we can drink liquor. In the Bible, the word wine can refer to both alcoholic wine, and non alcoholic wine (grape juice). Actually, the high quality wine (refered to as new wine) was fresh grapejuice, which didn't ferment and gain alcoholic qualities. The old wine, which is poor and cheap quality, gained alcoholic properties. When a person drank wine, unless he was purposely trying to get drunk, he would drink the newest wine available. If you look at the context of most of the passages which have wine, you can easily see a distinction between this old alcoholic wine, and the new fresh grapejuice wine. The reason why people drank wine as much as they did back then was because most of the water was unfiltered and unhealthy to drink, therefore you must drink something otherwise you'll die of thirst. Thus, it was a life and death situation that people drank wine. I believe James (maybe another apostle), tried to make a vow against drinking all wine, but because of the poor qualities of water, he began to get sick, so Paul urged him to continue to drink the wine.

Finally, as Christians, our goal shouldn't be how close can we get with the world, sin, and our lusts, and still be 'ok' with God. As Christians, our goal should be how close we can get to God, and forsake the way of the world. This isn't legalism, but this is devotion to God, as Christians we are suppose to be set apart for His use, giving over every single thing to Him. On earth, we don't work for earthly rewards, or constantly induldge in these earthly pleasures, but our goal is to study, work, and train, to be more like Christ. We're only earth for a few years, but we will eternally be before God. How we spend time on this earth effects how we will eternally stand with God, therefore we must use this time on earth as preperation for eternity, not as a vacation from full 100% dedication to God in every aspect of living.
