  • Shaving

I know there's been threads about shaving before, but meh I've just a few questions and I want an excuse not to be doing revision.

Firstly, why does everyone seem to love shaving oil. I've seen/heard many people say once they've tried it they've never gone back or similar statements. I find that the shave quality isn't any better than foam/gel and there's no less irritation. Also, the oil just means the hairs clog up the razor even more because they stick together. I've used a few different ones (some expensive, some just the chemist's own brand) and I just don't get the big deal.

Secondly, how do I avoid razor rash/ingrown hairs on neck? I'm no newbie to shaving, but it is just beyond me. I'm aware of the whole shaving with the grain to avoid irritation, and my cheeks are lovely and blemish free. But under my neck the grain just has a life of its own. If you know what I mean, it's kinda like laminar (cheeks) vs turbulent (neck) flow. It just goes in any and every direction, sometimes in circles. I try my best to shave with the grain but this coupled with the fact that with the grain gives a crappy shave means I end up with a red mess of spots. I do the whole hot water before and cold after too. I use a Mach 3.

So yeah, just thought I'd ask them. Feel free to share your shaving habits. I tend to shave once a week or so, I prefer how it looks after 2 - 3 days, but I normally go for a clean shave as this ensures it's pretty even. I know I could get a good electric razor and a lot of this would be sorted, but it's just not something I can afford right now (my experience with cheap electric = bad).

I've got a $50 Norelco electric from a few years ago, haven't changed the blades and it still works for me. Granted, my neck isn't a forest but maybe electric is the way to go there.

Stupid neck. It's the cause of all my shaving woes.

Recently went over to electric, Phillips shave with a nice little machine that does the cleaning for me (I am lazy like that) and I think it gives me a close enough shave to my liking.

It's the thing you do to get that boy fuzz you've got on your face to look like a man.

I usually shave every other to every 3 days, I use a Tesco brand triple blade razor with Gillette shaving gel with added moisturiser, usually have no problems shaving, I find its best to do it straight after I get out of the shower while my body is wet because if I do it just after a quick wash I am more likely to encounter problems like dry skin afterwards. I can never shave my neck completely clean unless I go against the grain.

I have that brand new Gilette Fusion (5 blades) and I always use Gel. Gel is so much better than the cream.
I tried using only water but that was quite a bad experience...
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal...
