It's illegal for him to own the weapon, not to use it. If the appropriately aged owner of those weapons had been standing in the vicinity, it's a non issue. As the cop can go "hey.. ahh you own these and you're letting them shoot them? ahh gotcha." but without that person right there they can say they have all the permission on earth but the cop isn't going to believe them, is going to hassle them, and is going to threaten something of which they are blatantly not guilty of, and cause all kinds of grief. See?

His post above just illustrates just exactly how much the sheriff will be willing to harrass the guys doing the shooting for the above reason. It's a crap shoot. They chose not to push it, and I don't blame them.

Jerome all you need is a backstop that the rounds will not penetrate through, and yes I'm aware that's asking quite a bit for the 7.62x39, but enough sandbags, a large mound of moved earth, will all do the job.

Sorry, let me explain "slightly illegal"

Shreveport-Bossier is a pair of cities seperated only by a river, so people tend to call it... Shreveport-Bossier, because we really are like one city. Half the kids I've been going to school with live in Bossier, alot of my friends live there, etc and vice versa.

Shreveport is considered the better half, as far as society itself goes. Around he're were like... Texans, I guess. Bossier... well, generally if you see a overly redneck, stepdaughter-beating trailer trash dude walking around here, chances are he's in Bossier.

Now, to get to the ranch, you leave my house, head east, cross the Red River, and then turn south onto Barksdale, one of the "bigger" roads. From there you leave Bossier and then leave Caddo Parish itself.

The ranch we shoot on is literally on the parish line - as you turn off the main road, there is a streetsign with "Webster Parish" nailed on right under it. So, we're in Webster by about 3 feet.

Now, in Shreveport, like I said, sleazy cops. But Bossier, for all it's sleazy people, has some of the most uptight, badass, incorruptible cops I've ever seen.

Seriously, I've never seen people speed there.

Now of course, every other settled area within 30 miles has a Shreveportesque Good Ol' Boy police force.

So, when the guy threatens to "call the Sheriff", it probably means that every holiday, he sends the Sheriff a basket full of fresh deer meat, fixes the Sheriff's son's huntin' rifles when they break, or somesuch.

But the thing is - if he doesn't, and he calls the Bossier Sheriff, then we have a 75% chance of being in the clear, because the Bossier Sheriffs Do No Wrong.

But the Webster Sheriff will probably bust our chops, but the thing is, Chad's father owns a small plot of land that has oil-rig/processing equipment, and so he likes to kick back some petrol to the police force during those cold winter nights.

So assuming the Webster cops get pulled into this, it doesn't really matter if we're 18, it matters whether or not Chad's dad sent enough oil versus whether or not Dick NEighbor fixed enough broken huntin' rifles.

Ephemeral by "slightly illegal" he's referring to the Louisiana state law that says you have to be 21 years of age to own a pistol or "assault rifle" in the state of Louisiana. As they are 18-19 they're under that, even though they don't own the weapons, they would've gotten in shit for it.

My post was about consideration and common sense. I was not going to list everything that could go wrong, but clearly any activities that would cause people to leave if the law were to show up can not be considered a 'good' situation.
Hence, trying to defend one's behavior when you are outside the law, if something were to push you into a court of law, is going to bring even more grief. So I feel that you missed my point.
The point was that you stand a much better chance of avoiding risk and costs when you are NOT doing things that are against the law vs. when you are within the law, regardless of any possible unrelated event(s).
