Once upon a time there was a man. He anticipated the release of the Sony Playstation Portable and marked the day on his calendar when it would be released. After he successfully acquired a PSP on that fateful day, he got home only to realize he purchased a $250 paperweight that's easily scratched and looks smudged all the time. All hope seemed to be gone for the portable system, now eclipsed in popularity by the Nintendo DS. Well, then there was this thin, yet bright, ray of light that emanated out of his PSP. Intrigued, he looked and saw there were two games on tap for the PSP which would take his expensive paperweight from 3rd string bench warmer to something he'd most likely spend his free time in the studio playing.
That man is me and those games are Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution. Better known to us, hopefully, as Star Ocean for the SNES and Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PSX. I was not a big fan of RPGs during my days playing the Super Nintendo, I have to admit. But, I did become a huge fan when the Playstation came around and Final Fantasy 7 opened me up to that genre, as it did to many other people like me. When I picked up this, then Enix, title; I was immediately engorged with the story, characters, and environment. Now, they're coming back, and remixed for the PSP.
Both games will have redone voice acting. That means you won't hear that annoying, yet absurdly comical "Energy Arrow" from Noel Chandler, character introduced on the second disc of Star Ocean 2. To attract the old as well as the new, the games will have more voice acting for the dialogue in the story as well as the private actions and side quests.
Speaking of those, they will add more side missions and private actions to do in the towns to extend the story. Also, in the visual category, the graphics will be obviously upgraded and the artwork will be redrawn for modern audiences. Will this be the first game for the PSP that will require two UMD discs to play, like the PSX's version that had 2 CD-Roms? Only time will tell, but I'm excited as hell over this. Here are a couple very early screens from Star Ocean 1 for the PSP...

Combat Scene from Star Ocean: First Departure.
