Its like comparing the R.L. Stine to Stephen King. Yeah kids could probably read either but there's a lot they won't understand from Stephen King- they have different target audiences. While Stephen King requires you to have at least some high school education to fully grasp his books, I was reading and enjoying R.L. Stine in 4th grade, maybe earlier...
J.K. Rowlings wrote most of Harry Potter while living on welfare and not working, aimed at a preteen, young teen crowd, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote for a love of the story, while a professor at Pembroke College in Oxford, England.
I could continue in on how Tolkien created an elaborate and extremely interesting world, is considered the father of modern fantasy, was great friends with C.S. Lewis (who also wrote a better series than Hairy Potter)... but I just want to end on my original point- this is a dumb comparison.
Maybe if you compared two authors of even remotely comparable skill this would be a worthwhile discussion... so why not... Goosebumps versus Harry Potter?truth about vets vs noobs [clickable]

What made the LOTR movies so good is that Jackson loved LOTR, he knew everything there is to know about it, he loved the books, almost lived them himself and he put that in the movies.Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.Comment

While you may scoff, the two are easily compared. Are they not both the Hero Journey in myth? The ambiguity that some see as callow often leads many to different intepretations. There are many things to be said about Harry Potter that goes beyond basic plot, newbies. And fuck the movies, seriously.
