On a sidenote mantra:
Introduction:
A friend of mine went to live in qingdao, 1 year ago. Spoke no chinese. Now she's getting better at it (as in, ordering chicken wont result in getting a snake or bull-balls-looking/tasting meat balls)
Another friend of mine desided - after finishing study - to tour around china (income was becoming a dive instructior at some places), and he backpacked for roughly two years. Spoke no chinese.
Both my friends say they were completely lost (communication wise) and survived on pizza-hut for the first few months. Took both quite some weeks to adjust/ feel comfortable.
Now, the question:
How did you travel/ handle communicating in China? You just went and got surprised or .. ?

I found travelling in China to be alot easier than expected. Pretty much all signs are written in pinyin and adjusted to western languages. The chinese people are helpful and friendly and willing to help you out. Even if you are not able to communicate by talking You can always show a note of where you are going or a ticket or anything that you know they understand and they can point or even find someone who can explain it better. Sure not many of them speak english but its amazing how much you can understand from someone even without talking using hands and even sounds (train sounds etc..Originally posted by SEAL View Post

) You might end up in a few funny situations and you cant be afraid to make a fool out of yourself. Its good fun!
We also always had a small translationbook with us whereever we went to make it easier at "restaurants" and stuff like that but to be honest we didnt really use it much. Some of the times we ended up going into the kitchen to point out whatever we wanted. All you have to do is be patient smile and have fun. Kinda like the rules of bargain!
During your trip you obviously also pick up small words and sentences that are really useful either from the locals or from other travellers
