Quite often my being realistic is mistaken for pessimism. Overly optimistic people drive me up the wall, especially when they make plans that make no sense and just assume they will work.

Both, because I'm Buddhist and I know what I'm capable of and what others are capable of. Don't limit yourself to choosing between the two, why not be both?

Sometimes I get down on myself and others, and other times I'm confident in myself and others. It depends on the situation and my mood. I guess that makes me a realist, but I don't like summing myself or others up in a word.

                edit: Except Face....That guy's a coont.

                  op·ti·mis·tic

                  1. disposed to take a favorable view of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.

                  re·al·is·tic

                  1. interested in, concerned with, or based on what is real or practical.

Say, you have 50% of the chance of getting your dream job in the next month or so. A optimistic person would believe that (s)he would be able to get that job. A realistic person is aware that the chance of failure is the same as success.

So you can not be both optimistic and realistic at the same time.

Optimistic people are happy. Realistic people have a higher chance of getting what they want.

Pessimistic people are neither happy, nor do they tend to get what they want because they could not be bothered to try. So I did not assume people consciously want to be Pessimistic.

Since I smoke alot of pot and am autistic, I am both - I truly do think about both sides of any issue. Pretty much every time I talk about something, I use the phrase "but realistically..."

Do realistic people really have a higher chance of getting what they want, or do they just want what they can get? I mean, they don't expect things to go their way all the time, so their standards are low enough that they can actually meet them.

I'd call myself a realistic romantic: I have bold dreams, but I know they aren't likely to come true.

So you can not be both optimistic and realistic at the same time.

Depends on your beliefs because I would look at it like this. I believe that nothing is impossible. Stating that you have a 50% chance of getting a job is either stating that there is another person applying for that job, you are not completely qualified, etc. But in my perspective, and maybe this deals with confidence too, I know that I'm able to go in any direction, do anything I want to, I don't limit myself...this is the way I was raised up so I apologize if it sounds "unrealistic" but that's how I look at things, it's also one of the main concepts of my Buddhist faith.

As an optimist, I'd believe that I was capable of doing the job and capable of getting it, so I'd do my best to get it. As a realist, I know that I am capable of doing anything, and would therefore know that I could perform this job.

Let me present another example, a career with the FBI. I know that because my skills are qualified enough, I would be a good FBI agent. I would do the job whole-heartedly and be happy doing it.

And, an optimistic person is aware of failure too...but it's the fact that he/she doesn't allow that to override his/her positive way of thinking, in other words, his/her optimistic outlook outweighs his/her pessimistic view. It's a battle within oneself, an internal struggle. Even those who are always presenting or representing that "humanitarian" or "optimistic" personality have a battle within themselves, but it's the fact that they can overcome their own weakness and continue to present themselves in good decorum.

                              optimist:

telcat will no longer post on forums

                              (not likely)

                              realist:

telcat may be assasinated by some other forum-goer.

                              (increasingly likely)
