      Street Racer

The SNES version, not the crappy SEGA version. Wikipedia tells me there were other versions too, but I don't know if they were like the SNES or SEGA one.

Me and my brother used to play Rumble all the time. Fun times. (Hodga was clearly the best for racing, Frank for Rumble).

Dragon Spirit. The picture is utter garbage, but it's your basic who-the-hell-has-ever-heard-of-this top-down shooter. There were two game modes: if you fail to beat the increadibly easy level at the start, you become a gold dragon, meaning you have autofire enabled and go through a shorter set of levels; otherwise, you're blue, mashing the buttons, and the game is about twice as hard to beat. But in both modes, you can grow extra heads. Three of them.

Castlevania 2: Simon's Curse. A lot of people hate this game, yeah. The Angry Nintendo Nerd gave it a lot of shit. But you have to remember that this title spawned the present Castleroids approach to the series, basically saving it from being just a trite themed platformer. In this one you feel like you're actually adventuring, doing something yourself ... the others, you're just along for the ride, left to right. C2 rough around the edges and takes a lot of exploration and thought to get anywhere, but is overall a damn good game.

Dragon Warrior (Quest) I. OK, everyone in Japan knows of it, but in the US this was actually a sleeper. I got this in the mail when I was 6 for subscribing to Nintendo Power. What a great game. You aren't pampered for an easy time as in the FF series, and the story is succinct to the point of perfection: go kill the Dragon Lord. In retrospect I think games in the series went progressively downhill, more and more bogged down with side quests and other such tripe. This one did it all naturally.

He means this, for those of you who have not played it. Man, it was a sweet game. It even had full-motion video for dunks! ... Alright, so it's more like 6 badly rendered frames of a guy drawn in grayscale, but still...

I would also like to nominate Arkista's Ring. A buddy of mine had a copy of this way back in the day. It's a little bit of Zelda, a little bit of Gauntlet and a little bit of crack. Fun game.

I still have the old hand-held Mattel Baseball, Basketball & Football games. I do not even think they are 8 bit. What a great use of LED lites and cheap sound.
