  • Crysis Demo is out!

Just played through the demo, it's pretty damn good. The visuals are amazing and the gameplay is spot on.

    (Warning it's 1.8gb).

I've attached an NZB of it for those of you with Newsgroup access.

    I tested it.

I ran it in 1680*1050 with all settings on medium. I had a slight FPS lag.

I've bought a new computer recently, and it's powerful. I should be able to run this game with better settings.

What settings did you guys play on?

The enemy AI was pretty lame. Standard one see you = everyone firing at you. Even if you try to move around undetected after being spotted.

There's alot more negative I could say about it. It's pretty overhyped, but it's worth a free download.

Graphics was awesome. Gameplay not so awesome.

      8800GTS 320mb

Played it 1280 x 1024 with all on high with no AA. Ran fine, with a few stutterings during cutscenes (especially the one at the end). Underwater looks amazing.

The developer's publicly stated that it's basically built for next-gen and high-current-gen hardware (quad core processors, NV 9xxx series cards, etc). Saying you bought a machine recently doesn't necessarily mean it'll run full-bore. My friend has an SLI'd GF8800s, and it's still not able to handle his full res.

I disagree. The enemy AI's actually pretty nice--everything's pretty much destructable, and if you shoot down a tree, the enemy adapts and takes cover behind the fallen trunk. If YOU take refuge behind a tree, the AI knows to just shred it to get to you. I'm a fan so far.

Again, I respectfully disagree. I've played three demos lately (UT3, COD4, and Crysis) and Crysis beat everything pretty handily (although COD4 was pretty fun--demo was just almost too short, and fairly formulaic).

I'm going to replay the demo with another AI difficulty to see if that improves it. Found out after my post that there's a option in the game besides the normal difficulty that toggles the AI.

What AI difficulty did you play on Conc?

It's pretty impressive for a demo... now only if I could get a peek at what it looked like in DX10. They should create drivers and enable dx10 on all geforce 7xxx cards imo. I have a rig thats a couple years old with 7800gtx sli... perfectly capable of handling 99% games out there at max res and max detail.

The demo is quite glitchy (bad AI, sound lag, rendering problems), and I haven't seen that much that's new in terms of gameplay besides the suit powers. Even those can't be switched in and out as quickly. I mean, the video that preceded the actual gameplay got me hyped up because I thought you would be able to do everything that's on there.

I agree very much with Bioture.

You see a dude, you aim dead on a dude, you fire lots of shots at the dude. Accoring to your aim they should hit.

The dude is still standing. You fire more shots. He still stands. Some more. Stand. Moar. Dead.

You're hitting him, but it seems like russian rulette. 95% of your clip are blanks.

Team Fortress 2 is entirely different, but awesome with this. You aim, fire and if you hit you see you hit.

If you're just aiming at a guy and holding down fire, of course only a few will hit, this is the case with any FPS (not including Tf2, which isn't exactly based on realism). Also, even when aiming with Iron sites, you'll have some wobble, using the strength mode will cut down this wobble, and combined with going in prone means you get pretty much zero wobble so you can snipe headshots until your heart is content. (Bonus: you can shoot off their helmet, pick it up and beat them with it).

I'm aware of the feature that prevents you from holding down the firing button. That's a pretty standard feature these days.

With so much focus on realism, it gets a little lost to me when you can hit a guy X times in the chest, with him just firing back at you.

I wish I could fraps my point and show it to you Ewan, but this game is pretty demanding, and throwing fraps on top of it isn't going to work well.

To the same effectiveness? Plus a lot of the suit powers seemed off - the cloak lasts for about 3 seconds if you sprinted, armor takes about two hits before the energy is drained, etc. The weapons mod system is pretty easy to use, but even with the red dot sight the accuracy of the rifles are horrible. Even in single shots... say you're cloaked with an standing enemy 10 yards away, going for a headshot is only 50/50. plus if you shoot multiple targets with the silencer on, they just look around with you in plain view. Maybe this is changed in harder modes, but in normal the enemies are really really stupid.

whatever. i know that all these minor things will be polished off when it's actually released.

Bioture brings up an interesting point.

There's not that much use of features that rarely be used since you got more effective ways of doing things.

The main focus of the game is the alien part, and I don't care that much about how the game is vs the koreans. If the aliens are well made, and have a good AI then this game is going to be tres awesome.

I found a better way to explain my previous point, Ewan.
With full realism like this, where there are no real hit indicators (there isn't any huge visible spurts of blood, or anything else that indicates a hit except for instant death). If you don't want to put anything like that in to preserve realism, you have to make it in a way where even a chest hit knocks the enemy on the ground. Theres nothing real about standing still and shooting back after you've been shot.

No, ENGINE is about the trees being destructible. AI is the enemies using the cover dynamically.
